Super Imposed Weed Control in the Farmers Field of Bhanga, Faridpur in Boro Season

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted with the objective to observe the performance of herbicide and BRRI weeder in controlling weeds in farmers field and to adopt weed management technology by the farmers. On-farm super imposed weed control trials were conducted with three farmers in three different location of Bhanga thana in 2007-08 in Boro season to examine the efficiency of weed control to generate information that will allow farmers to adopt BRRI weeder and herbicides wisely and profitably in the future. Six weed species were found in the farmers field. The prevalent species common were Cyperus difformis, Echinochloa crus-galli, Monochoria vaginalis , Scirpus juncoides , Leptochloa chinensis and Cynodon dactylon. Weed number and weight were higher in farmers practice plot followed by BRRI weeder weeded plot and herbicide treated plots. Grain yield were also higher in BRRI weeder weeded plot followed by herbicide treated plot and farmer practice plot. It is observed that yield increase from farmer practice plot were 0.58 t ha^-1 in BRRI weeder weeded plot and 0.50 t ha^-1 in Herbicide + 1 hand weeded plot.

Objectives:

To observe the performance of herbicide and BRRI weeder in controlling weeds in farmers field and to adopt weed management technology by the farmers.

Methodology:

On-farm super imposed weed control trials were conducted with three farmers in three different location of Bhanga thana in 2007-08 in Boro season to examine the efficiency of weed control to generate information that will allow farmers to adopt BRRI weeder and herbicides wisely and profitably in the future. Weed management treatments were; Butachlor 5G + 1HW, BRRI weeder (at 20 and 40 DAT) and farmers practice (FP). For each treatment plot size was minimum 800 m² in three location.Treatment were imposed side by side in the farmers field. Herbicide was applied at 5 DAT and BRRI weeder used at 20 and 40 DAT. Weed data were taken at 40 DAT. All other operations were done by the farmers. In farmers practice plot farmers were weeded twice at 15 and 45 DAT. In one location one farmers weeded three time due to its heavy weed infestation. Yield data were collected following appropriate method.

Achievement/Findings:

Proper weed management practice can improve the existing yield achieved by the farmers. BRRI weeder along with one hand weeding performed better in the farmers field of Bhanga, Faridpur. So initiation should be taken to adopt proper weed management technique in the farmers’ field based on location.
