Establishment of Green Manure Intercropping with Rice and Nitrogen Rates on Yield of Rainfed T. Aus- T. Arnan Cropping Patterns

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Supply of N, either from urea or from Sesballia rostrata as green manure (GM) intercropped with rice, increased grain yield over control both in pair row (PR) 10-x 20-x 30-cm) and single row (SR) (20-x 20-cm) planting method under rainfed condition. Pair row planting of rice gave better grain yield than the recommended single row rice planting method. The response of N fertilizer applied from urea in PR was quadratic in nature the optimum N rate that maximized rice yield in T. Aus and T. Aman 1994 was 68.3 and 83.3 kg/ha, respectively. During T. Aman 1995, the response of N fertilizer applied from urea in PR was quadratic in nature for the grain yield but for the straw yield was linear in nature. The optimum N rate was 93.4 kg/ha that maximized rice yield in T. Aman 1995.

Objectives:

Therefore, a study was undertaken to find out the possibility of intercrop ping Sesbania with rice, and integrated N management for sustainable rice production under rainfed

Methodology:

Field experiments were conducted during the Aus and Aman season in 1994 and 1995 at BRRI Gazipur. There were 12 treatment combinations (Table 1), in which T 1- T 9 were paired row rice (lO-x 20-x 30-cm) and TIO-T12 were single row rice as normal recommended planting (20- x 20- cm). In paired row rice, four treatments Tl-^T4 intercropped with green manure (GM) S. rostrata, in which either single and double line GM in the centre of 30 em inter row space and rice was 20 ern apart at each inter row space. In these two GM establishment methods, were compared with addition of 30 kg N/ha from urea. In rest of the paired rows (T s- T 9) nitrogen was applied as urea @ 0, 30, 60, 90 and 120 kg N/ha. In contrast to this, single row rice planting (T 11- T 12)' intercropped with either single or double line GM in every 4 rows of rice were compared with no GM (T 10) as control. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with 3 replications. Seedling age for Aus rice was 25 days and that of S. rostrata and T. Aman rice was 35 days. BR26 and BR11 were used in the Aus and T.

Achievement/Findings:

It was observed that the application of nitrogen either as urea or as GM significantly increased grain yield over control for all planting methods. There was no significant difference between single line and double lines intercropped GM on grain yield of rainfed BR26. Application of 30 kg N from urea in PR intercropped with GM increased grain yield but was not statistically significant. Double line GM in PR increased both dry biomass and N accumulation than single line GM in PR. Application of N from urea in paired row rice significantly increased yield over control
