Updating of Upazila Soil and Land Resource Utilization Guide, Muksudpur Upazila, Gopalganj

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This Upazila has 16 unions, 195 mauzas and 1 municipality having 9 wards. The area is divided into Ganges Floodplain, Meghna Estuarine Floodplain and Peat basins. Five land types namely highland, medium highland, medium low land, low land and very low land are identified in the Upazila based on inundation level. There are three textural types namely loam, clay loam and clay. Sara, Gopalpur, Ishwardi, Ghior and Ramdia soils are identified in Ganges Floodplain; Debidwar, Burichang, Magra, Palong, Paysa, Pirojpur and Kotalipara soils are identified in Meghna Estuarine Floodplain and Harta, Rajoir, Satla soils are identified in Peat Basins. Five water recession types namely very early, early, normal, late and very late are identified in the depending on time span. Three drainage class are identified namely intermittently drained, poorly drained and very poorly drained. Major cropping patterns are Rabi vegetables-Kharif vegetables; Rabi crops-Jute-T.Aman; Rabi crops-Jute-Fallow; Rabi crops-mixed broadcast aus and aman; mustard-boro, boro-B. aman; boro-fallow and Fallow-B. aman. Soils in the Upazila are deficient N, P,K, Zn & B.

Objectives:

1. Update soil and land resources inventory.

Methodology:

Aerial photo-interpretative soil and landform map (1:25,000) of respective Upazila is prepared using remote sensing and GIS technique. The map consists of mapping units comprising physiography, land form, land type, soil type and their proportion in a particular mapping unit. Field survey is carried out in rabi season preferably after harvest of T.Aman. Soils are checked by opening mini-pit along catena following a traverse line so as to cover maximum variability. Composite soil samples are collected following approved technique. In total 167 composite soil samples were collected and analyzed in the laboratory. Data on crops/cropping patterns, inundation depth and duration, fertilizer/irrigation applied in a particular checking point is recorded by interviewing farmers. Maps are corrected after field survey. Data physical and chemical data are processed and guide is prepared.

Achievement/Findings:

The total area of Muksudpur Upazila is divided into 3 physiographic units namely Ganges Floodplain (10,346 ha, 33.6%), Meghna Estuarine Floodplain (10,114 ha, 32.8%) and and Peat Basins (10,370 ha, 33.6%). High land, medium high land, medium low land, low land and very low land covers 3.7%, 4.5%, 30.1%, 34.8% and 6.8% of total area of the Upazila.Clay soils predominate (68%) in the Upazila followed by clay loam (7.6%) and loam (4.3%). In Ganges Floodplain major soils are Ishwardi (19%) and Ghior (10.2%). In Meghna Estuarine Floodplain major soils are Burichang (17%), Debidwar (8.4%) and Pirojpur (5.2%). Clay soils predominate (68%) in the Upazila followed by clay loam (7.6%) and loam (4.3%). Water recedes within Agrahayan from 30.1% land and within Paush from 28.2% land and after two weeks in Paush from 13.4% land. Timely Rabi crops cultivation is limited to 8.2% of the land in the Upazila. Soils are mainly poorly drained (62.8%) and very poorly drained (13.4%). Major cropping patterns are Rabi vegetables-Kharif vegetables (2.6%); Rabi crops-Jute-T.Aman (2.2%); Rabi crops-Jute-Fallow (4.3%); Rabi crops-mixed broadcast aus and aman (3.5%); mustard-boro (1.6%), boro-broadcast aman (4.4%); boro-fallow (56.1%) and Fallow-broadcast aman (3.3%).
