Response of Bold Seeded Groundnut Mutants to Different Row Spacings and Plant Populations

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the experimental farm of the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh to study the response of five bold seeded mutants (Mutant-l , -2, -3, -4 and -5) and their parent, Dhaka-I to three inter-rows (30, 40 and 50 cm) and three intra-row populations (9, 18 and 27 plant m^-2). Mutant-2 and -3 gave considerable yield increase amongst all the mutants and the parent variety. Inter-row spacing of 30 and 40 cm apart (yielded 1261 and 1288 kg ha^-1) were equal but showed significantly better performances than 50 em apart (1169 kg ha"). Intra-row population of 18 plants m^-2 (yielded 1340 kg ha^-1) was at par with 27 plants m,2 (yielded 1432 kg ha^-1 but showed significantly higher performances than 9 plants m^-2 (yielded 945 kg ha^-1) For all the genotypes used in this study, an intra-row population of 18 or 27 plants m ^-2in 30 or 40 cm rows was recommended for optimum yield.

Objectives:

To find out a suitable genotype and the optimum plant population requirements amongst recently developed bold seeded mutants. selected for confectionery and other uses after gamma-ray treatment of a local cultivar, Dhaka-I.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in a high land of the experimental farm of the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture. Mymensingh. The soil was a sandy loam with a pH value of 6.0 and moisture holding capacity of 120 mm in 1M depth. Five bold seeded mutants; Mutant-l , -2. -3, -4 and -5 with their parent cultivar, Dhaka-I. and three row spacing of 30, 40 and 50 cm with three intra- row populations of 9. 18 and 27 plants m" were used as treatments for this study. The experiment was laid out in a split-split plot design; keeping mutants and the parent in the main plot and row spacing and intra row populations in the sub and sub-sub plots. respectively. A unit plot size was 2m x 2m. The given row spacing had accommodated 4, 5 and 6 lines for the population treatments of 9, 18 and 27 plants m". respectively. All plots were fertilized during the final land preparation with 40 kg N and 120 kg of P₂o₅and K₂0 per hectare in the form of Urea, TSP and MP. Normal cultural practices were followed whenever needed. Data at maturity on yield and yield contributing characters recorded were : plant height, number of primary branches, length of cotyledonary branches, number of total pods, 100- pod and - seed weights, shelling percentages and pod yield plant^-1 and ha^-1 The data were subjected to statistical analysis by following Gomez and Gomez (1976). Significant mean differences were also determined by following Duncan's New Multiple Range Test.
