Physiological and Biochemical Responses of Mungbean Cv. Kanti and Mb87 to Potassium Nitrate

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted with mung bean cultivars VIZ. Kanti and MB87 at RARS, Ishurdi with three rates of potassium nitrate ( 0.0, 20.0 and 40.0 kg N / ha ) applied at the time of sowing. The results showed increases of TDM and seed yield with inorganic N. The increases in TDM and seed yield were associated with increases in leaf area index (LAI), leaf area ratio (LAR) and leaf chlorophyll contents and decreases in leg-haemoglobin content in nodules and chlorophyll a / b ratio. Kanti was more responsive ( 26% ) than MB 87 ( 6%). 20 kg N / ha proved to be a compromising inorganic nitrogen rate for mung bean.

Objectives:

(i) To find out a compromising state for mung bean

(ii) To identify a physiological and biochemical basis for such compromising state.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at RARS, Ishurdi with mungbean ( Vigna radiata wilczek.) cultivars, Kanti and MB87. The experiment was conducted in RCBD with three rates of potassium nitrate (0. 20 and 40 kg N / ha) at sowing in three replicates. The seeds were sown in lines (40 em between rows) and after the seedling emergence uniform plant population (66 plants / m²) was maintained by eliminating extra plants. For growth analysis. plants were harvested at the exponential phase of growth from a square metre area in triplicates. Relative growth rate (RGR), net assimilation rate (NAR) and crop growth rate (CGR) were determined following the method of Radford (1967). Leaf area ratio (LAR) and leaf area index (LAI) were calculated by dividing total leaf area by plant biomass and unit area respectively. Leaf area was measured by Licor automatic leaf area meter. Yield data were collected from three 1 m² area taken randomly from each plot. Leaf chlorophyll content was determined by extracting the chlorophyll in 80 percent acetone and using the specific absorption coefficients of Arnon (1949). Leguminous haemoglobin content was determined by extracting the leg- haemoglobin from the fresh nodules in Drabkin's solution following Cyan':lethaemoglobin method (Schifftmann and Lobel, 1970).
