Ovipositional Preference and Growth of Pulse Beetle on Some Species of Pulses.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Laboratory studies were conducted on the ovipositional preference of pulse beetle on six spe.v.es of pulses, such as pigeonpea, cowpea, chickpea, grasspea, mungbean and lentil. The beetles laid the highest number of eggs on pigeonpea and the lowest number of eggs on lentil. The color and smoothness of the seed surface influenced the egg laying behavior of the beetles.The reddish brown color of the pigeonpea was highly attractive to the beetle.The percentage of adult emergence was highest on mungbean (73.5%) and lowest on grasspea (23.1 %). The duration of adult emergence was lowest on mungbean (18.2 days). It was observed that the ovipositional behavior of the beetles was not related to the suitability of the seeds for the development of the beetles.

To find out the most preferred host of C. chinensis.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Entomology Division, BINA. Mymensingh, from July to December 1990. Six different species of pulses were used : Mungbean ( Vigna radiata ). cowpea ( Vigna sinensis ), pigeon pea (Cajanus cajani, chickpea (Cicer arietinum ). lentil (Lens culinaris ) and grasspea (Lathyrus sativus). The seeds of these pulses were collected from the local market. Forty seeds of each pulse species were taken and then divided into four equal parts and placed in four petridishes (10 seeds in each petridish). Each petridish was considered a replication. The experiment was laid out in a completely randomized design with four replications. The petridishes without lids were covered with a 80 em x 60 cm box having glasses in three sides and nylon net cover on the top. Twenty-four pairs of newly emerged adults (24-hour old) were then released at the centre of the box and were allowed to lay eggs for 48 hours in the contents of the petridishes. After counting the eggs the petridishes were covered with the lids and were left for adult emergence. The number of emerging adults were counted. Forty seeds of each pulse species were soaked in water for 24 hours to soften the seeds. Each seed was then cut longitudinally to half of its depth in such a way that the seed kernel could be taken out keeping the seed coat intact-Tiny cotton balls were then inserted in to the empty seed coal to give the seed coat the normal shape and size of a pulse seed. These "false'' or "artificial seeds" were then used for oviposition studies following the same procedure as described earlier. The colour, thousand seed weight and characteristics of the seed surface were recorded. The protein content of the seeds were also determined following the official Methods of Analysis (Anon. 1 <)80). All the data were analyzed statistically.
