On-farm Performance of Rapeseed Mutants

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

On-farm performance of rapeseed mutants and varieties were studied under two management levels at Farming Systems Research (FSR) site Bagharpara, Jessore during 1988-89 and 1989-90. In the first year two rapeseed mutants BI A-I and BINA-2 were studied with Sampad, SS-75 and Tori-7 as check in which another mutant BINA-3 was included in the second year. BINA-3 under research management produced the highest grain yield (2127 kg/ha) which was closely followed by BINA-l (1942 kg/ha ) and SS-75 (1878 kg/ha ) under the .ame management. Days to maturity of those mutants (92-95 days) were almost similar to that of SS-75 (92 days). BINA-3 and BINA-l were superior and/or equivalent to SS-75 in respect of yield and duration.

Methodology:

The experiment on mutant strains of rapeseed was conducted in the farmer's field at FSR site Bagharpara, Jessore during rabi season, 1988-89 and 1989-90. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with four replications. The unit plots measurred 4x5 m. In the first year two rapeseed mutants BINA-l and BINA-2 were studied with Sampad, SS-75 and Tori-7 as check in which another mutant BINA-3 was included in the second year.The mutants/varieties were studied under two management levels, (i) research management and (ii) farmer's management. Research management involved application of fertilizers at the rate of 120-35-33-35 kg NPKS/ha along with one weeding-cum thinning at 20 days after sowing (DAS). All of P, K and Sand 50% of N was applied as basal and remaining 50% N was applied as topdress at 35 DAS following irrigation. In farmer's management fertilizers were applied at the rate of 29-8-3-4.5 kg NPKS/ha as basal (according to farmer's choice) but no weeding and thinning were done. The crop was sown in late October with 10 kg seed per hectare for Tori-7 and 12 kg seed per hectare for the remaining varieties/ mutants. Irrespective to management practices the crop was irrigated twice at 25 and 45 DAS. Data on yield and yield components were recorded. Combined statistical analysis of those parameters were done after Gomez and Gomez (1983). BINA-3 was not included in the analysis as the strain was studied for one year.

Achievement/Findings:

It is evident from the results of two years study that the yield of rapeseed can be increased greately with the improvement of management practices. Application of fertilizers at the recommended rate along weeding and thinning can increase the yield of rapeseed significantly. Mutant strains BINA-3 and BINA-J were found to produce superior and/or equivalent yield to those of SS-75 and Sam pad. Days to maturity of those strains were almost similar to that of SS-75 but higher than that of Sampad.
