A field experiment was initiated at BRRI Regional Station, Rangpur to observe the performance of Subl materials for adoption in submergence prone areas. Three submergence tolerant genotypes along with five standard check varieties were tested in this trial under three different planting conditions (completely submerged for 16 days inside tank; the non-submergence check that was placed outside the tank and the double transplanting system (bolan) was placed outside the tank) in T. Aman 2010 season. In submerged condition, BRRI dhan52 gave the highest grain yield (4.8 t ha-1). The short duration (114 days) fine IR64-Subl showed the highest survival percentage (94%) and also produced satisfactory grain yield. The rice variety BRRI dhan51, BR11-Subl and IR 85260-391-1192 produced higher grain yield in all conditions. Farmers recommended PVS-3 (IR 85260-391-1192) as the best materials and PVS-6 (BRRI dhan33) as the worst genotype. PVS-6 (Binadhan7) was considered as second worst and PVS-5 (BRRI dhan52) was selected as second best entry.

A submergence tolerant variety is essential for these flood-prone areas. The experiment was under taken  to observe the performance of submergence tolerant rice varieties in flood-prone areas in northern Bangladesh for last few years.

Three submergence tolerant genotypes, along with five standard check varieties, were evaluated using a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications under three planting conditions during T. Aman season 2010. Treatment 1(T1) = completely submerged for 16 days inside tank; Treatment 2 (T2) = the non-submergence check (outside the tank) and Treatment 3 (T3) = double transplanting system outside the tank. T1 was established in a submerge tank to observe tolerance of Sub 1 genotypes where as T2 under rainfed conditions (check) outside the submergence tank. In submergence or flood-prone areas, early flooding occurs during transplanting some farmers choose to transplant older seedlings after receding of flood water. Bolan (double transplanting system) is also practiced in these situations.

Seeds for the experiment were soaked and seed treatment was done before sowing using the fungicide Babistin (Carbendazim) to avoid seed-borne diseases. Thirty eight-day old seedlings were used for T1, T2, and the first bed for T3 having 2-3 seedlings per hill with a spacing of 25 x 15 cm. T1 was submerged to a depth of 80 cm by irrigating water in the tank for 16 days at 10 days after transplanting (DAT). Sanitation and weeding were done after 10 days of de-submergence. Weeding was also done at 15, 30, and 45 DAT for T2. For T3, weeding was done in the first bed at 30 DAT and in the second bed during the panicle initiation (PI) stage. The percentage of survival for T1 was counted based on the greenness of the stem or leaf. Other data were also collected at maturity stage for all the treatments.

It is proven that Subl genes have an extra capacity to survive under submerged condition. Cultivars without the Subl gene experience severe leaf damage even under mild submergence stress, whereas cultivars with Subl showed little or no damage coupled with faster recovery. In the experiment, among all Subl genotypes IR64 Subl found with the highest survival percentage (94 %) and also gave satisfactory grain yield (3.0 t ha-1) under flooded condition. It is early maturing (150 days) genotype and also impressive in stress condition. However, same maturing entry (154 days) Samba Mahsuri-Subl gave 3.2 t ha-1 yield which was associated with higher I number of tiller and panicle per unit area. Medium maturing line (162 days) IR85260- f 391-1192 gave 3.9 t ha-1 yield. BRRI released high yielding long duration variety BRRI dhan52 gave the highest yield 4.8 t ha -1 with 61.8% survivabity. BRRI dhan5l gave 4.4 t ha-1 yields with 57.4 percent survival. Though BR11-Subl showed good tillering ability and gave 4.1 t ha-1 yields  with 56.8 percent survivability but it was a long duration genotype (170 days).
