Effect of Rate of Green Manuring on Nitrogen Uptake and Yield of Br3 Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

During. this period' of high, energy crisi's interest has been generated among the rice scientists and farmers of many countries to use green manure in rice cultivation.

It has been shown by many workers (Sharma, 1969 ; Tiwari et al, 1980 ; Eaqub and Mian, 1981 ; BRRI, 1983 ; BRRI, 1984) that green manures are good source of nitrogen for rice and their use increased rice yield by 29-50%. Moreover, fertilizer mangement, particularly of nitrogen, 'is very difficult in coastal areas due to tidal submergence. Use of GM could be a solution to this problem.

The merits and demerits of green mangy in comparison to chemical fertilizers are the function of fertilizer price and the availability of land and labour for growing GM (anaka, 1978).

For efficient designing of fertilizer managemeiat, particularly of nitrogen from both organic and inorganic sources, the knowledge of the irate, time and method of using organic manure is essential.

Objectives:

Effect of different rates of sunhemp^-green manuring (GM) on the growth, yield and nitrogen uptake of transplanted BR3 rice was studied in the field. Application of GM at 6 to 8 t/ha increased productive tillers, grain and straw yield. Green manuring reduced tiller number at early growth stage but increased at later stages while the trend was entirely reversed when chemical fertilizers were applied. Nitrogen uptake from GM applied plots increased ,with time at all rates of GM but the percent recovery was very high at lower rates. Both uptake and recovery of sulfur increased with the rate of ' GM. Green manuring at 6t/ha along with 40-60-40 N-P₂0₅-K₂0 kg/ha appeared to be the best combination for maximum yield.

Methodology:

The, experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Rice ResearchInstitute (BRIM) regional station, Barisal during boro season, 1985. The test ation was a^- medium high land having clay loam soil (Organic C 1.27% total-N 0.10%, pH-6.2). The land was opened with country plow and was pt flooded to a depth of about 5 cm water.

The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications. There were three, blocks, each was divided into six unit plots of 4 x 5m each to which the six treatments were randomly assigned. Sixty fiveday-old sunhemp. (Crotularia juncea). plants were uprooted, chopped to about 10 em pieces and were incorporated with the soil at the rate of 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 -t/ha.^, A treated control involving chemical fertilizer only at the rate of 80-60-40 kg/ha of NP₁O₅K₂O was included.

Urea= was applied to supply 20 kg N/ha each at maximum tillering stage and at 7 days before panicle initiation as topdress to plots receiving green manure: In the treated control plots 80 kg N/ha from urea was applied. iri"'fh'ree" equal' splits ; the first dose was applied 15 days after 'planting (DAT) apd the 'rest two at maximum tillering and at 7 days before panicle initiation. Whole of triple super phosphate and muriate of potash were incorporated as blanket application. V

Achievement/Findings:

percent recovery of the applied N. Among the GM rate the highest N recovery of about 28% was obtained with 2 t/ha GM and the lowest (17.4%) was with 8 t/ha. Fertilizer alone gave the highest recovery (47%) of added N. These findings and the data in table 4 indicate that GM leaves more residual N in soil while the application of fertilizer caused more depletion of soil-N. The data in table 4 also show that application of GM or fertilizer, particularly at higher rates, of GM,-left the highest amount of residual nitrogen, the increase being the highest with 6 t/ha GM. Further increase in the rate of GM was not found to leave higher amount of residual nitrogen.
