Soil Acidity Organic C, Total N, Available Phosphorus and Exchangeable Bases in Some Soils of Tidal Floodplain Region of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The distribution of soil acidity, organic C, available P and exchangeable bases (K Ca, Mg and Na) in the different soil series are related to the growth and development of crop. Some selected tidal floodplain soils of Bangladesh were studied to understand the distribution of soil acidity, organic C, total nitrogen, available P and exchangeable bases. The results revealed that most of the soils are negatively charged. Maximum soils are slightly acidic in reaction and some soils showed slightly alkaline and one soil showed neutral in reaction. Organic C concentration is more or less in most of the soils but two soils showed high organic C. Phosphorus deficiency was observed in most of the soils. Potassium and sodium concentration is below the reported threshold values in most of the soils. Calcium and magnesium concentration of the studied soils is higher in respect of K and Na.

Objectives:

The present study aimed at investigating the distribution of soil acidity, organic carbon, total nitrogen, available phosphorus and exchangeable bases in tidal floodplain soils of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

A laboratory experiment was conducted at the Soil Science Laboratory and Central Laboratory of Patuakhali Science and Technology University during the period October 2011 to March 2012.Thirteen surface (0-15 cm) soil samples used for the sorption study were collected from cultivated rice fields in January to March 2010 after T-Aman harvest. The selected soil sampling sites were of different Upazilla (Dumki, Kalapara, Amtali, Wuzirpur, Gouranadi, Borhanuddin, Lalmohan) of Patuakhali, Borguna, Barisal and Bhola districts. For the convenience of discussion, the 13 soils are referred to as soil 1 through soil 13 as shown in Table 1. The collected soil samples were air-dried and ground to pass a 2-mm sieve. Then the investigations were made with the collected soil sample. Soil pH: pH_{w -}Ten grams of air dried soil sample was taken in a 50 ml beaker and 25 ml of distilled water was added. The suspension was stirred with a glass rod at regular interval for 30 minutes. A glass electrode pH meter (SevenEasyTM, pH meter S20, Mettler, Toledo) calibrated with buffer pH 7.0 and 4.0 measured the pH of the soil suspension. pH_KCl - The pH_KCl was determined by stirring 10 g soil in 25 ml 1.0 M KCl solution in a similar manner of pH_wdetermination. Delta pH (ΔpH) - The difference between the pH in KCl and that in water gave the value of, as ΔpH = pH_KCl - pH_w. Organic carbon - Organic C was determined by Walkely and Black wet digestion method. Total nitrogen - Total nitrogen was determined by modified Kjeldahl method. Olsen P - Available P was determined by the extracting solution of 0.5 M NaHCO₃, pH 8.5. Exchangeable bases (K and Na) - Exchangeable bases were determined by the extracting solution of 1 N CH₃COONH₄, pH 7.0.
