A field experiment was conducted during the period from February to May 2005 to determine the insect fauna associated with soybean plants at different growth stages of the crop in the Farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Myrnensingh. A total of 20 insect species belonging to 6 orders and 13 families were recorded on the crop. The natural enemies were abundant throughout growth period. Ten natural enemies species were found to be associated with the pest which have been enlisted in this study. However, natural enemies and many others were not included as they appeared as few in number in scattered way. The number of insect fauna reached to highest peak at vegetative stage of soybean crop. The semi looper population was relatively higher (15.29%) and the occurrence of defenders especially lady bird beetles were frequent (43.48%) at every stages of growth. A total of 2145 individuals of pest insects and 453 individuals of natural enemies were found at different growth stages of the crop. Both the pest insects and natural enemies were higher at vegetative stage of soybean. The number of pests insect was 548 at vegetative stage of the crop when a total of 2145 pest insects were recorded at different crop growth stages. Out of total number (453) of natural enemies at different growth stages of soybean, 224 were found at vegetative stage. Soybean semi looper, soybean hairy caterpillar and green stink bug were the most abundant in soybean field. Among the natural enemies two species of lady bird beetle, carabid beetle and two species of spider were most prevalent in soybean field. The pest, cutworm was found occasionally (0.49%) and natural enemies parasitic wasps we.re less abundant (1.1%) in soybean field.

1. To know the different insect species of soybean crop and their natural enemies, and

2. To study the relative abundance of insect pests and natural enemies at different growth stages of soybean crop.

Experiments were conducted to determine the abundance and diversity of insect pest and natural enemies in soybean fields. The investigation was set up at Agricultural Field Laboratory. Plot No. 45( I), Bangladesh Agricultural University, M)mensingh, during the period from 23.02.2005 to 12.05.2005. The experimental fied was located an the Agricultural Farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University. Mymensingh at 25.750Elatitude and 95.50°E longitude at a height of 18 meters above the see level. The experimental site was very near the weather office. The size of experimental plot was 4mx25m All fertilizers except half portion of urea were applied at the time of final land preparation. The remaining half of the urea was applied as top dressing at vegetative stage. The varlety of soybean PB-1 was grown experimental fields. The followings were used during collection and preservation of sample: i) Sweeping net ii) PIBStic container iii) Poly bag iv) Brash v) Petridish vi) Pencil vii) Scale viii)Forceps ix) Alcohol x) Formalin solution xi) Bamboo stick. xii) Paper sheet etc. At vegetative stage 3 times and maturing stage 2 times sampling was done. For observation and counting of insect pest and natural enemies 10 areas were selected randomly which having 4 m x 2.5 m. This area was bounded by nylon ropes with the help of bamboo stick in 4 comer of the selected area. The collected samples were properly preserved. identified, sorted and counted in the laboratory, Department of Entomology. This investigation was done from seedling to maturing stage to determine relative abundance of insect and natural enemies. During experimental period data on weather parameters viz. air temperature. relative humidity (RH) and rainfall were collected from the Weather Yard, Department of Irrigation and Water Management. Bangladesh Agricultural University. Mymensingh. The data collected from the study area were entered in the computer with prepared data base through Microsoft Excel data base program. Relative abundance of different insect pest and natural enemies were calculated.
