Catch Composition and Catch Per Unit Effort of Seine Net (kaski Jal) at Rangamati Reserve Bazar Point of Kaptai Lake

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A total of 11 fin fish species under 6 orders and 8 families and 2 shell fish species under 1 order and 1 family were identified from the ‘Kaski Jal’ catch composition. Maximum CPUE for Kaski (Corica soborna) was 1.86667 kg/gear/day at site 1 and 1.232 kg/gear/day at site 2 where the minimum for Goda icha (Mabcrobrachium rude) was 0.05 kg/gear/day at site 1 and for Guci (Macrognathus aculeatus) was 0.024 at site 2. Maximum CPUE (by number) for Kaski (Corica soborna) was 3850 no./gear/day at site 1 and 2736 no./gear/day at site 2 where minimum number for Ayre (Sperata aor) was 0.2 no./gear/day at site 1 and Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) was 0.006 no./gear/day at site 2. Maximum daily catch for Kaski (C. suborna) was found to be 5.6 kg/day at site 1 and 2.468 kg/day at site 2 respectively where as the minimum weight for Tengra (Mystus gulio) was 0.04/kg/day at site 1 and 0.432 kg/day at site 2. Average daily catch for Kaski for five months period was 4.034 kg/gear/day. About 2500 units of Kaski fishing was in the Lake. Thus yearly total Kaski landing was estimated as 2100 mt. Kaski landing varied from 2138 mt to 2464 mt since 2005-06 to 2011-12. The small clupeid Kaski alone contributed 17.16% to 28.73% in the total fish production (5388 mt to 12421 mt) in the Kaptai reservoir.

Objectives:

The objectives of the study to know the catch composition and catch per unit effort (CPUE) of kaski jal and yearly total production of Kaski fish and its contribution to the total catch in the Lake of Chittagong Hill Tracts.

Methodology:

The materials for the study were collected from the two spots near the Reserve Bazar point at Rangamati of Kaptai reservoir. The spots are named as site 1 and site 2. The samples were collected monthly from the seine net operated in the site 1 and site 2. The study was conducted on the catch composition, CPUE, Daily Catch of seine net at Reserve Bazar point of Kaptai Lake for five months period from August to December 2012. Monthly samples were collected directly from the fishermen of the selected spots during fishing period. Collected specimens were preserved in 10% formalin solution and carried to laboratory of Department of Zoology, University of Chittagong for further study. For studying, catch per unit effort (CPUE) and daily catch a random sub-sample of 200g was collected from each catch and the total weight of catch was measured and recorded in each month from August 2012 to December 2012. The total number of individual for each species was counted and then the weight of these fishes is also measured and recorded. Thus the weight and number of fishes of the whole sample and number of fishes and weight for each species were estimated by arithmetic rules. Relative abundance of fish and prawn species were documented on the basis of number of individuals recorded from fishing gears. Estimation of CPUE - Recorded and collected data are processed by Microsoft Excel Program. The CPUE was calculated by following standrad formula.

Achievement/Findings:

Kaptai Lake is a man made reservoir contributing as one of the important fisheries resources in Bangladesh. The total catch composition of the lake was identified from the seine net ‘Kaski Jal’ which mainly composed of fin fishes and fewer of shellfish. Maximum CPUE (both weight and number basis) was recorded for ‘Kaski’ (Corica soborna) at both site 1 and site 2, where Chapilla (Gudusia chapra) was in second position and the minimum CPUE was for shellfish and catfish. The small clupeid ‘Kaski’ alone contributed 17.16% to 28.73% in the total fish production (5388 mt to 12421 mt) in the Kaptai reservoir. Therefore, in Bangladesh Kaptai Lake is largely valuable for nutrient supply, employment opportunity, improvement of national economy, fisheries resources, biodiversity and ecological balance.
