Efficacy of Seven Insecticides on the Larvae of Brinjal Shoot and Fruit Borer, Leucinodes Orbonalis Guenee Under Laboratory Condition

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The effectiveness of seven insecticides, such as Bactoil, Helicide, Nimbicidene 0.03 EC, Tracer-45 SC, Proclaim-5 SG, Necstar-50 EC and Boster-10 EC against the brinjal shoot and fruit borer was evaluated. Results revealed that 100.00 % mortality was observed in the treatment with Tracer-45 SC (Spinosad) after 24 hours exposure of 4^th instar larvae of brinjal shoot and fruit borer (BSFB) which was statistically similar to Proclaim-5 SG, and Boster-10 EC (85.93 % mortality) followed by Necstar-50 EC (79.26 % mortality). After 48 hours exposure, percent mortality was the same (100 %) in Tracer-45 SC followed by 92.96 % in both the treatments of Bactoil and Proclaim-5 SG being statistically similar, followed by 85.93% in both the treatments of Necstar-50 EC and Boster-10 EC, and 74.82 % in Nimbicidene 0.03 EC. However, lowest mortality was 3.33 and 6.67 % after 24 and 48 hours exposure, respectively in control, which was significantly lower than that of all the insecticide treatments. Tracer-45 SC, Bactoil, Proclaim-5 SG demonstrated significantly higher mortality against 4^th instar larvae of BSFB in comparison with other treatments. Finally, it was found that among all the treatments Tracer-45 SC demonstrated the highest effectiveness against 4^th instar larvae of BSFB.

Objectives:

To determine the mortality rate of the pest by exposing them in seven selected insecticides in the laboratory.

Methodology:

The comparative efficacy of seven selected insecticides mentioned below in terms of mortality of 4th instar larvae of BSFB was evaluated in the Insecticide Toxicology Laboratory at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural Univesity (BSMRAU), Gazipur from March to April 2009. The treatments comprised seven selected prospective insecticides each with a selected dose as follows: T₁ = Bactoil (Bacillus thuringiensis, Bt) @ 2 ml/liter, T₂ = Helicide (Heliothis Nuclear Polyhedrosis Virus, HNPV) @ 0.5 ml/liter, T₃ = Nimbicidene 0.03 EC (Azadirachtin) @ 4 ml/liter, T₄ = Tracer-45 SC (Spinosad) @ 0.4 ml/liter, T₅ = Proclaim-5 SG (Emamectin benzoate) @ 1 g/liter, T₆ = Necstar-50 EC (Chlorpyriphos) @1 ml/liter, T₇ = Boster-10 EC (Cypermethrin) @1 ml/liter and T₈ = Control. The shoot and fruit borer infested brinjal fruits were collected from the unsprayed field, and larvae were separated by splitting the fruits with a knife. The 4^th instar larvae of the pest identified by their size were used in the biological test. Ten (10) larvae were taken in a filter paper and dipped into insecticide solution for ten seconds. The larvae were then put into 12 cm diameter Petri dishes with sliced brinjal. The Petri dishes were arranged in CRD with three replications each at 30±1⁰C temperature and 70±3.0% relative humidity. The number of dead and alive larvae were counted after 24 and 48 hours of the treatments and the observation had been continued until the adult of BSFB emerged. The larvae with abnormal symptoms, such as body contraction, feeding cessation and paralysis were counted as dead.Data were analyzed by using MSTAT-C software for analysis of variance. Analysis of variance was made by F variance test and mean separation was performed by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) (Gomez and Gomez 1984).

Achievement/Findings:

Tracer-45 SC (Spinosad) performed the highest effectiveness (providing 100.00% mortality after 24 hours exposure) against 4^th instar larvae of BSFB. After 48 hours exposure, Bactoil & Proclaim-5 SG showed (proving 92.96% mortality in both treatments) relatively higher efficacy against the 4^th instar larvae of BSFB in laboratory study. Tracer-45 SC (Spinosad) could be used as the most effective insecticide against brinjal shoot and fruit borer (BSFB). Effectiveness in laboratory and field situation would be different, so repeated trial is needed to make it confirm.
