Principal Scientific Officer
Agronomy Division, BRRI, Gazipur-1701

The field experiments was implemented at the experimental farm of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), Gazipur for a final comparison was made in 2010-11 whereby the best performing SRI factors as emerged out of the previous trials were tested against the current BRRI recommended Boro rice production system. It was eventually observed in this experiment that the best performing SRI treatment involving wider spacing (30 cm×25 cm), SRI irrigation, younger seedling (12 day-old) raised from compost bed, 3 times of soil stirring and 10 t ha-1 of dung manure+100% RF produced the highest grain yield (10.17 t ha-1), which was 93% higher than that (5.27 t ha-1) obtained from the treatment of present BRRI recommended practices. The findings revealed the fact that the best performing SRI factors under Bangladesh context would be the combination of: a] transplanting Boro rice earlier, from the last week of November to 2nd week of December, b] wider spacing (row: 30 cm and hill: 25 cm to 30cm), c] SRI irrigation, d] use of younger seedling (12 day-old) raised from compost bed, e] three soil stirrings, at 15, 30 and 45 DATs and f] SRI nutrient management @10 t ha-1 compost+100% RF. Hence, for realizing the full benefit of SRI to achieve high yields in Boro rice cultivation, it would be of interest to advocate for the integration of these factors (a-f) at farmers` level persuasions under conditions of Bangladesh.

  1. To select the best SRI techniques with compare to recommended practice for obtaining the highest performance of Boro rice
  2. To recommend the best SRI practices for the highest performance of Boro rice

Factors and treatments Factor A: Irrigation (I) - 2 I1 = 5-7 cm depth irrigation followed by further irrigation at 3 days after disappearing water from the soil. This irrigation will continue before panicle initiation stage after that 5- 7 cm standing water will keep up to hard dough stage. I2 = SRI water management such as 2 - 3 cm depth of water will add in the field during irrigation time just for soaking the soils and again water will add after 3 days of disappear from soil. This irrigation will continue before panicle initiation stage after that 5- 7 cm standing water will keep in the soil up to hard dough stage. Factor B: Manure and Fertilizer (N) - 2 N1 = Manure 10 t ha-1 + 50% of the recommended inorganic fertilizer (50% inorganic recommended fertilizer is 125-40-50-5 kg ha-1 of N-P2O5-K2O-S respectively. All will apply at basal except N. N will apply at ¼ N at basal, ¼ at 20 DAT, ¼ at 35 DAT and ¼ at PI) N2 = Manure 10 t ha-1 + 100% of the recommended inorganic fertilizer management (100% inorganic recommended fertilizer is 250-80-100-10 kg ha-1 of N-P2O5-K2O-S respectively. All will apply at basal except N. N will apply at ¼ N at basal, ¼ at 20 DAT, ¼ at 35 DAT and ¼ at PI) Factor C: Spacing (S) - 2 S1 = Recommended spacing (15 x 25 cm) S2 = Best performing spacing in SRI (30 x 25 cm) Factor D: Seedling age (A) - 2 A1 = 40 days old seedling seeding on last week of November and transplanting on 1st week of January. A2 = 12 day old seedling raising in compost bed and transplanting in 1st week of November Factor E: Soil Stirring (M) - 2 M1 = No stirring M2 = Three stirring at 15 DAT, 35 DAT and 45 DAT Experimental design The experiment was laid in a split- split plot design with 3 replications where stirring (M) 2 x irrigation (I) 2 = 4 levels factor were in the main plot, spacing (S) 2 x seedling age (A) 2 = 4 levels factor were in the sub plot and manure and fertilizer (N) = 2 levels factor were in the sub-sub plot. Tested variety was BRRI dhan29.

Grain yield of BRRI dhan29 was significantly affected by different selected SRI factors when those were compared with existing recommended practices. Wider spacing (30 × 25-cm), SRI irrigation method,  younger seedling age , three stirring  and 10 t ha-1 compost with recommended fertilizers interacted treatments performed higher grain yield than present recommended practices. Grain yield was lowest from none SRI factors which was combined with recommended practices interacted treatments. Higher grain yield was obtained when 10 t ha-1 manure was added with 100% of the recommended inorganic fertilizer treatment interacted with more SRI factors combined treatments. Grain yield increment was higher when irrigation × stirring treatment interact with spacing × seedling age. Wider spacing, SRI irrigation method, younger seedling age, three stirring and 10 t ha-1 compost with recommended fertilizers interacted treatments produced higher number of panicle, fill grain, than present recommended practice. Though 1000-grain weight was not affected by SRI or recommended practices but sterility% was significantly affected with all aspect of interaction of different selected SRI factors when compared with existing recommended practices (non SRI).
