Results revealed that 9 insect pests and 9 natural enemies were occurred in boro rice  from seedling to reproductive stages of rice plant. Among them green leafhoppers, rice bug, rice hispa, yellow rice stem borer and lepidopteran larvae were considered the most damaging and economically important pests while wasp, dipteran fly (unidentified), ground beetle were considered to be the most promising natural enemies in controlling insect pests of rice. At seedling stage, the highest percent relative abundance was observed in the population of green leafhopper (41.79%) among pests and wasp (42.53%) among natural enemies. At early tillering stage, the highest percent relative abundance was appeared in the population of grasshopper (35.36%) among pests and dipteran fly (35.59%) followed by ichneumonid (20.85%) among natural enemies. At maximum tillering stage, rice bug (66.92%) among pests and ground beetle (45.88%) among natural enemies showed the highest percent relative abundance. Similar trend was also observed at reproductive stage. The findings revealed that the relative abundance of insect pests and natural enemies varied with different growth stages of rice plant. Thus, this information would be helpful in applying pest control tactics for the management of harmful insects attacking rice.

To know the occurrence and relative abundance of insect pests and natural enemies in boro rice.

Experiment was conducted in research farm of Patuakhali Science and Technology University, Dumki, Patuakhali to know the occurrence and relative abundance of insect pests and natural enemies in rice ecosystem. The study was done in the month of January to June, 2012 during Boro rice season. In boro season, healthy seeds of rice variety BRRI Dhan29 were collected.The insect pests of rice and their natural enemies were collected by a fine nylon cloth sweep net (30 cm diameter). Sweeping was done from the plant canopy level including the interspaces between plants as well as close to basal region of the plants as far as possible. In each field, 10 complete sweeps were made to collect the insect pests and their natural enemies. Sampling was done at four stages of rice viz. seedling, early tillering, maximum tillering and panicle initiation stage in boro season. Sampling was done during morning hours at all study fields on all sampling dates. The insect pests and natural enemies of 10 sweeps from each field were collected separately in labeled container. The collected samples were properly preserved, identified, sorted and counted in the laboratory of the Department of Entomology, Patuakhali Science and Technology University. The samples were sorted and identified under stereoscopic microscope and magnifying glass. The percent relative abundance of insect pests and natural enemies was calculated.

The incidence of insect pests and natural enemies were similar in numbers. At seedling stage, the highest percentage of relative abundance was recorded in the population of green leafhopper and wasps but at early tillering stage, it was the highest in grasshopper and dipteran fly. At maximum tillering and reproductive stages, the highest percentage of relative abundance was observed in rice bug and ground beetle.
