Comparative Assessment of Tomato Varieties / Advanced Lines in Relation to Growth, Yield and Quality

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Different growth parameters together with fruit yield and quality of two advanced hybrid lines of tomato Bahar and E-6 were assessed along with their parents and check varieties. The hybrid Bahar had the highest leaf area index, crop growth and net assimilation rate among the tested materials. Both the hybrids showed increased fruit yield and harvest indices which possibly be influenced by the changed plant architecture. The plant architecture of Bahar and E-6 showed close association with the. parent varisties Oxheart and Anobik, respectively. The hybrids were 1-3 weeks earlier in maturity than those of their parents. Vitamin C content and fleshiness of fruits were increased in both the hybrid lines of tomato.

Objectives:

1.To analyse the physiological improvements of the two lines over their parents with a view to understanding the differences in the expression of physiological traits in modern varieties of tomatoes and

2.To know how these differences relate to their yield potentials

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted during November, 1992 to April, 1993 at the farm of the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh. The soil belongs to the old Brahmaputra flood plain having pH 7. O. Six tomato varieties including two advanced hybrid lines A-2, released as Bahar and E-6, along with their parents oxheart and Anobik and the check varieties Manik and Ratan were used in this study. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Fertilizers were applied at the rate of 160 kg N, 120 kg P2 05 and 100 kg K20 per hectare in the form of urea, triple super phosphate and muriate of potash, respectively. Unit plot was 2m x 2m and the plants were spaced at 60cm X 50cm. Thirty days old seedlings were transplanted on November 15, 1992
