Effect of Fresh Leaf Biomass of Agroforestry Tree Species and Nitrogen on Growth and Yield of Transplant Aman Rice Cv. Br11

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the Agroforestry Farm, Department of Agroforestry, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during the period from July to November 2005 to study the effect of fresh leaf biomass of agroforestry tree species and nitrogen on growth and yield of transplant Anum rice cv. BR11 rice (Mukta). Four levels of leaf biomass of Dalhergia sissoo fresh leaf biomass, 0 t ha^-1 (Lo = control), 2 t ha^-1 (L₁ ), 4 t ha^-1 (L₂) and 6 t ha^-1 (L₃ ) and four levels of nitrogen 0% (0 kg N ha^-1 = N₀), 50% (40 kg N ha^-1 = N₁), 75% (60 kg N ha^-1 = N₂) and 100% (80 kg N ha^-1 = N₃,) of recommendation dose (80 kg N ha^-1 ) were included in the study. The experiment was laidout in a randomized complete block design with three replication. The unit plot size was 2 m x 1.5 m. Thirty five days old seedlings were transplanted on 5 August, 2005 at the rate three seedlings hill^-1 with 25 cm x 15 cm spacing. All TSP, MP, gypsum, zinc sulphate were applied at final land preparation and urea was applied at top dressing in three equal splits on 15, 30 and 45 days after transplanting. Intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Crop growth parameters like plant height, number of tillers hil^-1 leaf area index and total dry matter hill^-1 were recorded from two random hills, were from each plot at different sampling dates i.e. 25. 40, 55 and 70 days after transplanting (DAT). Data on crop characters, yield and yield contributing characters were taken on plant height at harvest, total number of tillers hill^-1 ,number of effective tillers hill^-1 , number of non-effective tillers hill^-1, length of panicle, grains paniclc^-1, no. of spikelets per hill, weight of 1000-grain, grain yield, straw yield, biological yield and harvest index. Dtaa on growth parameters, crop characters, yield and yield contributing characters were statistically analyzed and treatment means were ranked by DMRT. Growth parameters such as plant height, number of tillers hill^-1, leaf area index and total dry matter were significantly affected by leaf biomass and nitrogen.

Objectives:

1. To find out the effect of leaf biomass in combination with different nitrogen levels on the growth and yield of rice, 2. To find out the appropriate combination of N-fertilizer and leaf biomass for profitable rice production, and 3. To meet nitrogen requirement of rice from tree leaf biomass

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the field laboratory of Agroforcstry Department, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during July - November, 2005. The land of the experimental field was medium high in elevation. It belongs to the Agro-ecological zone of the Old Brahmaputra Flood Plain. The experiment was carried out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Leaf biomass and N-fertilizer were considered as treatment. The plot size was 2 m x 1 .5 m. The treatments were as follows: Factor A: Dose of leaf biomass (Dalhergia sissoo fresh leaf biomass): i) Control {no leafbiomass - L₀}, ii) 2 t ha^-1 (leafbiomass - L₁), iii) 4 t ha^-1 (leafbiomass - L₂), iv) 6 t ha^-1 (leaf biomass - L₃). Factor B: Dose of nitrogen: (i) N₀ - Control (no nitrogen}, ii) N₁ - 50% Recommended dose of nitrogen (40 kg N ha^-1), iii) N₂ 75% Recommended dose of nitrogen (60 kg N ha^-1), iv) N₃ - Recommended dose of nitrogen (80 kg N ha^-1). Thirty five days old seedlings of BR11 were collected from Agroforestry farm of BAU. Seedlings were uprooted with care from the slightly irrigated seedbed. Three seedlings per hill were transplanted with 25 cm x 15 cm spacing on 5 August 2005. The experimental data were statistically analyzed by using MSTAT software in a computer. Means of different parameters were separated by Duncan 's Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

From the results of the present study, it may be concluded that Dalhergia sissoo fresh leaf biomass was proved to be effective as green manures in transplant Aman rice (cv. BR11) cultivation.
