Gis Application to the Groundwater Table Study of BARInd Area

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Desert prone Barind area in the North West region of Bangladesh needs a social awareness in the sense of utilization of its water resources specially limitedly available groundwater resources. In this paper an attempt is made to generate a message for the social survival so that local people can understand the vulnerability of groundwater exploration and they can exchange simulative use of groundwater and surface water. GIS technique has been used to associate, analysis, process the historical groundwater raw data obtained from several sources. Efforts were made for topographic classification and groundwater table analysis to simulate ground water table. Maximum depth to groundwater table occurs at the middle of April mainly due to irrigation abstraction and natural drainage. This maximum depth to groundwater table remains in the range between 2.0 m to 15.0 m in most of the areas. Groundwater in some of the areas in high Barind goes below 20.0 m depth. The locations where lowering trend of groundwater occurs indicate depletion of groundwater which in turn is not fully recharged during the monsoon. The places where groundwater level is not changed remarkably indicate that there is sufficient recharge at monsoon and there is no problem due to groundwater development. The study concludes that groundwater resources in some areas of medium and high Barind are inadequate to meet the present water demand.

Objectives:

The study was undertaken with the objective to GIS application to the groundwater table study of Barind area

Methodology:

ARC View 3.2 had been used to associate, analysis, process the raw data obtained from several sources and generate and view the outcome by following the methodology as shown in Figure 2. Digital Elevation Map (DEM) of Survey of Bangladesh, time series data of period 1996-2004 of 50 no groundwater monitoring well stations of Barind Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA) and 56 no groundwater monitoring well stations of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) have been used to carry out the analysis. Topographic Classification The landscape comprises mainly plain in the eastern part, dissected and undulating in the western part. Topography of the area varies from 9.00 m PWD in Noagaon to 47.0 m PWD in Nachol–Niamatpur area. Middle part of the study area is relatively high and uneven. Based on topography, the area can be divided into three category; High Barind, Medium and Low Barind as shown in Figure 3. Most of the area in high and medium Barind is flood free and low Barind is subject to flood and drainage congestion.

Achievement/Findings:

Groundwater resources in some areas of medium and high Barind are inadequate to meet the present water demand. The continuous lowering trend of Groundwater level indicates a non-sustainable situation with increasing draw down. There is limited scope of further exploration by shallow or hand tubewells in some areas.The situation is alarming for some specific areas in case of operation of STW and HTW as GWT has already been lowered beyond suction level for which, quite a large number of STW need to be replaced by DTW.
