Effect of Seed Rates on the Agronomic Performance of Direct Seeded Rice Under Irrigated Low Land Cultural Condition

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Two modern rice varieties, viz. IRATOM 24 and BR 14 and two advance lines, viz. BINA-13 and BINA-19 were tested for agronomic performance under direct seeding methods at different seed rates in the boro season. The results revealed that seed rate did not show any significant effect on grain yield. The variety IRA TOM 24 gave significantly highest grain yield (6.87 t/ha) over those of the other three varieties/ advanced lines irrespective of seed rate. However, newly developed two advanced lines viz. BINA 13 and BINA 19 did not differ significantly with BR 14 during this investigation. The feasibility of direct sowing boro rice cultivation appeared to be a promising method using early maturing modern cultivars sown at the rate of 80 to 100 kg/ha if the other cultural conditions are properly maintained.

Objectives:

To evaluate the agronomic performance of some high yielding modem varieties/ lines towards high yield potentials through direct seeding cultivation.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) experimental farm, Mymensingh, during the boro season (January to June) of 1992. The soil p^H was •6.8, total nitrogen, available phosphorus and exchangeable potassium of the soil tested at the Soil Science Laboratory of BINA were 0.11 per cent, 12 ppm and 0.10 meq/1 00 g soil, respectively. Two rice varieties IRA TOM 24 and BR 14 and two advanced lines BINA 13 and BINA 19 were tested for agronomic performance under direct seeding method at seeding rates of 60, 80, 100 and 120 kg! ha. The experiment was laid out in a split- plot design with 3 replications. Pre-germinated seeds were broadcasted directly in the puddled field and a low land cultural condition was maintained. Chemical fertilizers viz., N, P₂0_5, K₂0, Sand Zn were applied at the rates of 100, 80,60, 15 and 4 kg/ha in the form of Urea, TSP, MP, Gypsum and Zinc sulphate respectively. Intercultural operations and crop protection measures were done as and when necessary. Special care was taken to drain out the plots after sowing to save the young seedlings for a few days. Irrigation water was again applied on 15 days after seeding and continuous flooding was maintained up to ripening stage. To avoid border effect the harvest area was reduced to 2. 5m x 2.0m. The plots were harvested at their full maturity when 90% of the seeds turned into golden yellow in colour. The crops of individual plots were separately threshed to measure the fresh straw weight and grain weight for each harvest area. Grain and straw weight were then adjusted at 14% moisture using the formula by Gomez, K. A. (1972). Ten randomly selected sample plants were harvested from the area immediately outside the harvest area and agronomic data were recorded and analyzed statistically. Duncan's New Multiple Range test was used for multiple comparison among treatment means (Gomez and Gomez, 1984) .
