The field experiment was conducted at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Rahmatpur, Barisal during Rabi season of 2013-14 to find out the suitable intercrop combination(s) for higher productivity and economic return. Seven intercropping treatments viz.  sole lentil (100%), sole mustard (100%) and five intercrop combinations {1 row lentil and 1 row mustard (1:1), 1 row mustard in between 2 rows lentil (2:1), 1 row mustard in between 3 rows lentil (3:1), 1 row mustard in between 4 rows lentil (4:1) and 2 rows mustard in between 4 rows lentil (4:2)} were evaluated in this study. The intercrop combination influenced the yield of the crops significantly. The highest yields of lentil (1.91 t/ha) and mustard (1.48 t/ha) were obtained from their respective sole crops. Intercropping reduced the yield of lentil (17-34%) but it was compensated by the mustard yield. The highest (2.29t/ha) lentil equivalent yield (LEY) was obtained from 1 row lentil + 1 row mustard. Land equivalent ratios (LER) of the intercrop treatments were the higher than those of sole crops. Treatment 1 row lentil + 1 row mustard gave the highest LER (1.65), gross return (Tk. 182400/ha), net return (Tk. 103200/ha) and BCR (2.29).

To find out the optimum plant population of mustard in association with lentil for achieving higher productivity.

The experiment was conducted during Rabi season of 2013-14 at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Rahmatpur, Barisal. The soil was sandy loam having pH 7.3 belongs to AEZ 13 (Ganges Tidal Floodplain). The soil was low in organic matter (1.34%) and deficient in total nitrogen (0.05%), available phosphorus (12 µg/g soil), exchangeable potassium (0.09 meq/100 g soil) and available sulphur (2.2 µg/g soil). Seven treatments were viz., T1= Sole lentil (30 cm x 20 cm), T2 = Sole mustard (30 cm x 20 cm), T3 =1 row lentil + 1 row of mustard, T4 = 1 row mustard between every two rows of lentil (2:1), T5 = 1 row of mustard  between every 3 rows of lentil (3:1) ,and T6 = 1 row mustard between every four rows of lentil (4:1), T7 = 2 rows of mustard between every 4 rows of lentil (4:2). The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Unit plot size was 4m x 4 m. Seeds of lentil (cv. BARI Mosur 6) and mustard (cv. BARI Sarisha 15) were sown on 23 November, 2013. Sole lentil and intercrop plots were fertilized with 50-90-40-102 kg NPKS/ha and sole mustard plot was fertilized with 250-175-90-160 kg NPKS/ha in the form of urea, triple super phosphate (TSP), muriate of potash (MoP) and gypsum. In lentil and intercrop plots, all fertilizers were applied as basal. But in case of sole mustard, one half of urea and full amount of TSP, MoP and gypsum were applied as basal and remaining half urea was applied before flowering at 30 days after sowing (DAS). Cowdung (5 t/ha) were applied as basal in all the plots. Intercultural operations like weeding, irrigation and plant protection measures were done for both the crops as and when necessary. Lentil was harvested on 15 March 2014 (114 Days after sowing). Lentil and mustard were harvested as whole plot basis. At harvest, 10 randomly selected plants of each crop from each plot were uprooted for collecting data on yield components. The collected data were analyzed statistically and the means were adjudged using DMRT. Economic analysis and benefit cost ratio (BCR) were also computed. Weather data on total rainfall, day-to-day maximum and minimum temperatures, and relative humidity were recorded during the cropping period

From one year study it was found that 1 row lentil + 1 row mustard perform better than other treatments. The study should be repeated in the next season for final recommendation.
