Solar and Wind Energy 'resources in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Average per capita consumption of electricity in Bangladesh. is lowest ill the world and has constrained economic growth. Alternative energy sources i.e., renewable energy (solar and wind energy) can play an important role in the energy supply in the country. But appropriate information on solar and wind energy resources data are ill adequate. Solar insolation and wind speed data has been collected from NASA Surface meteorology and solar energy data' set with respect to latitude and longitude at each district of Bangladesh. Bangladesh have got ample solar insolation throughout the country. Daily average solar insolation varies from 3.82-6.43 kWh/m²/day. Maximum solar insolations are 5.66-6.25. 5.49-6.28. 5.81 -6.24. 5.93-6.43. 5.31-5.66, 6.05-6.24 kWhm²/day on March-April and minimum are 4.00-4.44, 3.82-4.33, 4.11-4.65. 4.16- 4.45, 4.11-4.65, 4.30-4.63 kWh/m²/day on December-January in Dhaka, Rajshahi, Chittagong, Khulna, Sylhet and Barisal divisions respectively. Maximum wind speed of 2-3 m/s is found on March-April in Dhaka, Rajshahi, Chittagong, Khulna, and Barisal divisions.

Objectives:

Objective of this paper is to present the solar and wind energy resources (solar insolation and wind speed) in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has launched a renewable energy resource web site: - Surface meteorology and Solar Energy Data Set (SSE). The SSE global data set makes it possible to quickly evaluate the potential of renewable energy projects for any region of the world and is considered to be accurate for preliminary feasibility studies of renewable energy projects (Whitlock et al. 2000). The SSE data set is a continuous and consistent 10-year global climatology of insolation and meteorology data (July, 1983 to June 1993) on a 10 latitude by 10 longitude equal - angle grid covering the entire globe (64, 800 grid points). Although the SSE data within a particular grid cell are not necessarily representative of a particular microclimate, or point, within the cell, the data are considered to be the average over the entire cell area. In administratively, Bangladesh have six divisions named Barisal, Khulua, Sylhet, Chinagong, Dhaka and Rajshahi division. 'Barisal, Khulna, Sylhet, Chittagong, Dhaka and Rajshahi divisions have 6,10,4, 11,17 and 16 districts i.e., total 64 districts respectively. Latitudes and longitudes of these districts have been collected from, Site specific solar insolation, temperature, wind speed data has been obtained from SSE web site with respect to the latitudes and longitudes of these districts.

Achievement/Findings:

This present analysis of solar radiation data reveals that Bangladesh has got ample solar energy throughout the country and there is a bright prospect for application of solar energy to pumping irrigation, rural electrification in remote village. Wind energy is not being high in Bangladesh but wind energy can be put to a variety of uses especially for small water pumping, hybrid electricity generating systems with solar and small battery charging system. Information on these renewable energy (solar and wind energy) sources is important for renewable energy technology's project planning. formulation & implementation and utilization of these energy would reduce our energy crisis. improve environment, resource conservation, lessen dependence on imported energy and enhance sustainable development in Bangladesh
