An Investigation Into Die-back of Citrus (citrus Lilnon)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The die-back disease of different age group of plants was investigated in the Horticulture Farm, Department of Horticulture, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. The effect of mustard oil cake, NPK fertilizers, cowdung and irrigation either alone or in combination in controlling die-back of citrus was investigated in the Field laboratory of Plant Pathology, Department of Plant Pathology, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from September, 2005 to October, 2006. The experiment was laid out in Completely Randomized Design with five replications. Per cent branch infection was the highest in case of 20 years old plants of Horticulture Farm, whereas per cent branch infection was not found in case of one year old plants. It was observed that per cent plant infection was increased with the increase in age of the plants. The combined effect of mustard oil cake, NPK fertilizers, cowdung and irrigation on the number of branch per plant combination of mustard oil cake, NPK fertilizers and irrigation (T,3) and combination of mustard oil cake. NPK fertilizers and cowdung increased 125.00%, 117.80% and 123.00% branch per plant respectively over control. No disease was found from integrated application of mustard oil cake@300g per plant + cowdung@ 10 kg per plant or cowdung@10 kg per plant + irrigation. It was also found that the above combinations also reduced the per cent plant infection.

Objectives:

1. To find out out the die-back disease at different age group of citrus plants, and 2. To find the most effective and economic management of citrus die-back.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Citrus garden of Department of Horticulture and Field Laboratory and MS Laboratory of the Department of Plant Pathology, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. The land type was medium high belonging to the Sonatala soil series of non calcareous dark-grey floods plains soil type under the Agro Ecological Zone (AEZ-9), Old Brahmaputra Flood Plain.The type of soil of the experimental site belongs to the non-calcareous grey flood plain soil having pH range from 6.5 to 6.8.The experiment was carried out during September, 2005 to October, 2006. The experiment was laid out in Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with five replications. Plants were planted without blocking and five plants were planted for each treatment. One plant was used as one replication 2.5m x 2.5m spacing was followed to perform the experiment. 50cm x 50cm sized pits were prepared on 15 September, 2005 for plantation of citrus plants that raised by stem cutting method. At first the top soil was placed at one side of the pit and the bottom soil was placed at another side. Then the bottom soil was mixed with cowdung and mustard oil cake. Then the top soil was placed into the bottom and the mixed soil was placed at the top of the pit and this condition was retained for seven days. There were 14 different treatments combination. The number of die-back infected plants was recorded at 15 days interval for determination of incidence of die-back. The number of affected plants was expressed in percent. Moreover, number of infected branch per plant was also recorded. Infected stems/twigs were collected from the infected plants of the experimental field. The diseased branches only with typical symptoms were collected. Slides were prepared for identification of pathogens in the laboratory, Department of Plant Pathology, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. The collected data were analyzed statistically and the mean differences among the treatments were compared to each other by employing Duncan's Multiple Range Test.

Achievement/Findings:

From the economic and environmental point of view it is well understood that the application of mustard oil cake + cowdung or cowdung + irrigation may be advised to the citrus growers for management of die-back of citrus under field condition.
