Effects of Zinc on the Growth Performance of Selected Mustard Varieties

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The present investigation was carried out during Rabi seasons of two consecutive years of 2010-11 and 2011-12 to study the effect of three levels of zinc (0.0, 1.5 and 2.5 kg Zn ha^-1) on the growth parameters of three mustard varieties: BARI Sharisa-8, BARI Sharisa-14 and Binasarisha-4. Significant differences were observed among the varieties in respect of growth attributes of mustard at different DAS. BARI Sharisha-14 produced the tallest plants at initial stages, thereafter Binasarisa-4 showed highest plant height at all DAS. BARI Sharisa-14 significantly produced the highest TDM up to harvest over Binasarisha-4 and BARI sharisa-8. BARI Sharisha-14 also significantly showed maximum LAI up to 55 DAS and CGR up to 55-70 DAS and was not significantly superior to Binasarisha-4, but at declined stages Binasarisha-4 showed higher LAI and CGR. The levels of Zn showed significant variation on different growth attributes of mustard at different DAS. The maximum TDM, LAI, CGR and plant height were recorded at 1.5 kg Zn ha^-1 as compared to control and 2.5 kg Zn ha^-1 at all dates of sampling. All the growth parameters of BARI Sharisa-14 showed best performance with 1.5 kg Zn ha^-1.

Objectives:

To find out the effect of Zn on the growth performance of mustard varieties.

Methodology:

The experiment was undertaken during the Rabi season (October to February) of 2010-11 and 2011-12 to evaluate the effect of different levels of zinc on the growth parameters of three mustard varieties. The research was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh, Bangladesh. The experiment consisted three varieties of mustard (BARI Sharisa-8, BARI Sharisa-14 and Binasarisha-4) and three levels of Zn (0.0, 1.5 and 2.5 kg Zn ha^-1). The experiment was laid out in a two factor Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The land was first prepared by a country plough and subsequently ploughed with the help of power tiller and country plough followed by laddering. The weeds and stubbles were removed from the field. Seeds were sown in October 30 in each year with a rate of 10 kg ha^-1and it was continuous sowing in 30 cm apart lines. Seeds were covered with soil just after sowing. Then 5-8 cm plant to plant distance was maintained by thinning at 10-15 days after emergence. The experimental plots were fertilized with a recommended fertilizer doses of N, P, K, S and B from the sources of urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and boric acid, respectively (BARC, 2005). One half of the urea and the total amount of all other fertilizers were applied during final land preparation and incorporated into the soil. The remaining half amount of urea was applied at 22 days after sowing (DAS). Zinc @ 0, 1.5 and 2.5 kg ha^-1was applied as zinc sulphate containing 23% Zn, in the respective treatment plots during final land preparation. The experiment was repeated twice for confirmation of results.The collected data were analyzed using computer package MSTAT-C and means were adjudged by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

Achievement/Findings:

The results of the study indicated that the growth performance of mustard was significantly improved due to application of Zn in all the varieties and the best performance was obtained with the application of Zn @ 1.5 kg ha^-1. Among the varieties, Binasarisha-4 was superior in terms of plant height whereas BARI Sarisha-14 showed the best performance in respect of total dry matter, leaf area index and crop growth rate.
