Agronomic Performance of Some Rice Varieties/lines at Variable Spacings Under Irrigated Low Land Cultural Condition in Boro Season

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An Experiment was conducted during the Bora season of 1991-92 at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture experimental farm involving four varieties/advance lines and plant spacing. The mutant variety IRATOM 24 produced the highest grain yield (5.62 t/ha) followed by BINA 19 (5.49 t/ha) and BR 14 (5.34 t/ha). The lowest grain yield was obtained from BINA 13 (5.19 t/ha). Irrespective of the varieties, the closer spacing produced the higher grain yield than the wider spacing. A variable response of the other crop characters with respect to varieties and spacing were noticed. Interaction of variety and spacing did not produce any significant influence on the grain yield and other agronomic characters.

Objectives:

To find out a technology for maximizing rice yield and production in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out under irrigated low land cultural condition at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) farm, Mymensingh, during the period from November, 1991, to May, 1992. The experimental site belongs to the agro-ecological region of old Brahmaputra Floodplain having Noncalcarious Dark Grey Floodplain soil (FAO, 1988). The land was medium high with sandy loam texture. ' Two sets of treatments were included in the experiment, viz. Varieties/Advance lines; IRATOM 24, BR 14, BINA 4-39-15-13 (BINA 13), BINA 4-5-17-19 (BINA 19) and spacings; 15 em x 15 cm, 20 ern x 20 em, 25 ern x 25 em and 30 em x 30 em. The experiernent was laid out in a split plot design and replicated 3 times in which the varieties and spacings were distributed at random in the main plots and sub- plots respectively. The unit plot size was 4.0 m x 2.5 m. I The experimental plots were fertilized with N, P₂0₅, K₂0, S and Zn at the rate of 100, 80, 60, 15 and 4 kg/ha as urea, triple superphosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and Zinc sulphate respectively. One third of urea and whole of the other fertilizers were applied at the time of final land preparation on January 13, 1992. Another one third of urea was top dressed at the time of early tillering stage on February 15, and the rest one third before primordial initiation on March 2. A booster dose of urea equal to 113 of urea was applied at the panicle initiation stage as deficiency symptoms of N appeared in the whole field. Transplanting of 45 day-old seedlings of the varieties/lines was done on January 15, 1992, @ 2 seedlings/hill maintainig 4 different spacings as per treatments. After one week of transplanting, dead seedlings were replaced by fresh seedlings carefully, so that the missing hills in the field could be reduced to nil. The field was irrigated by flood irrigation method and steps were taken to maintain a constant level of standing water upto 7.5 to 10 cm in the field throughout the growing season. The field was, however, drained before 15 days of harvest to enhance uniform ripening of the grains. During entire plant growth two hand weedings were done; first weeding at 20 DAT (Days After Transplanting) and second at 45 DA T. Furadan 5G was applied @ 10 kg/ha on 30 DAT to control green leaf hopper, brown plant hopper and stem borer of rice.

Achievement/Findings:

It may be concluded from the results of this experiment and in agreement with other findings that 15 em. x 15 ern. spacing is the most suitable one for maximal rice productivity under high input condition and may be recommended for general practice. Among the varieties/lines, the early maturing varieties such as IRA TOM 24 and/or BR 14 may be cultivated in Bangladesh under irrigated low land cultural condition in boro season.
