Assistant Professor
Dept. of Agricultural Botany, Patuakhali Science and Technology University, Dumki, Patuakhali, Bangladesh.

Results revealed that variations of pod and seed sizes were existed between the two genotypes. Sizes of pod (6.72 cm long and 1.39 cm wide) and seed (1.71 cm long and 1.22cm wide) were larger in G2 genotype than G1 (6.42 cm and 1.60 cm long for pod and seed; 1.32 cm and 1.18cm wide for pod and seed, respectively). Average fresh and dry weights of pods (4.56 g and 1.54 g, respectively) and seeds (2.78 g pod-1, 1.10 g pod-1, respectively) were also greater in G2 genotype. Larger pod and seed with increased fresh and dry weights of pods and seeds were observed at PM among the four seed harvesting stages. Germination percentage was also greater (>80%) at PM stage in both the genotypes. Crude protein was greater in G2 genotype (30.27%) than G1 (21.70%) at PM stage. In combined effect, size, fresh and dry weights of pods and seeds were significantly greater in G2 genotype than G1 at PM stage. It was concluded that the pods may be harvested at PM for vegetable purpose due to larger size, maximum weight and nutrient content of seeds in the two genotypes of Lignosus bean.

To investigate the effect of four consecutive seed maturity stages viz. pre physiological mature (PrePM), physiological mature (PM), postphysiological mature (PostPM) and harvest mature (HM) on pod and seed morphology, moisture content, seed germination and nutrient composition (protein, fat, fibre) of seeds in two genotypes (G1 and G2) of Lignosus bean (Dipogon lignosus).

The experiment was conducted at the field laboratory of the Department of Crop Botany, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during October 2010 to April 2011. Two genotypes of Lignosus bean (G1 and G2) were used as planting material. Seeds were collected from previous experiment, which was conducted in the same department. The experiment was laid out in RCBD with 4 replications. The unit plot size was 9.0 m2 (3m x 3m).  Samples from the plants were collected beginning from the flowering until seed maturity. Flowers were tagged with different coloured woolen threads at opening of flowers (anthesis). Flowers were tagged at different times so that data on 33, 40, 47 and 54 days after opening of flowers (DAF) were obtained. The four ages of maturity (33, 40, 47 and 54 DAF) were designated as pre-physiological mature (prePM), physiological mature (PM), postPM and harvest maturity (HM) respectively. At each stage, the pod length and width were measured. Freshly harvested pods were shelled and the seeds were separated from pericarp. At each stage, seed length and width was also measured. Fresh weights of pericarp, seed and pod (pericarp plus seed) were obtained at each age. The samples were oven dried at 80°C for 48 hours and their dry weights of pericarp and seed were also recorded. Fresh and dry weights of seeds were recorded per pod basis. The percent moisture content of seeds and pericarp were also measured on fresh weight basis. The germination percentage of seeds was measured using blotter paper method in petridish. Proximate analysis of seeds was done to determine the nutritive value. Data were analyzed statistically. with the help of computer package MSTAT. The mean differences were evaluated by Duncan's Multiple Range Test.

From the findings of the present research work it was found that higher fresh and dry weights of pods and seeds but lower moisture content (MC) were observed in G2 genotype than G1. In respect of proximate analysis, the content of CP, CF, was greater in G2 genotype. DM was similar in both genotypes. In respect of seed harvest stages, generally pod and seed size was larger, fresh and dry weights of pods and seeds were greater at PM. Seed MC decreased from prePM to HM. Germination percentage was more than 80% at PM in both genotypes. CP was also higher at PM stage. In combined effect of genotype and seed harvest stage, the size, fresh and dry weights of pods and seeds were significantly greater at PM stage in G2 genotype than G1 one. Hence it may be concluded that pods may be harvested at PM by noting light green colour to obtain larger size and weight of pod and seeds, and maximum nutrient contents of seeds for vegetable purpose in two genotypes of Lignosus bean.
