Effect of Sowing Time on Plant Establishment, Growth and Yield of Different Mungbean Varieties in Coastal Area

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field trial was conducted of Farming System Research and Development site Lebukhali Patuakhali to determine optimum time of sowing of mungbean varieties for coastal area of Bangladesh. The trial was carried out in a split plot design with three replications. Four mungbean varieties of BARImug-2, BARImug-3, BARImug-4 and BARImug-5 were sown on five sowing dates viz. 1 January, 15 January, 1 February, 15 February and 1 March during the rabi season of 2000 and 2001 at Lebukhali, Patuakhali. Sowing dates assigned in the main plot and varieties assigned in the sub plot. All the varieties planted between 1 February to 15 February gave significantly higher seed yield and yield components. Sowing thereafter reduced seed yield drastically. The maximum seed yield (1143.41 kg/ha) was obtained when all the varieties were planted on 15 February. This sowing date also produced taller plants, higher plants per metre, higher pods per plant branches/plant and 1000-seed weight. Out of the four varieties BARImung-5 produced higher seed yield (1105.47 kg/ha) on 15 February sowing. Rest of the varieties also produced higher seed yield when seed were sown on 1 February to 15 February.

Objectives:

To find out an optimum range of sowing time and suitable variety for mungbean in coastal region to obtain maximum seed yield.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the farmers' field at Farming Systems Research and Development (FSRD) site, Lebukhali, Patuakhali (AEZ 13) during rabi season of 2000 and 2001 under rainfed condition. The experiment was carried out using the split plot design with 4 dispersed replications in FSRD site. Sowing date constituted the main plots and varieties the sub plots. Five date of sowing, such as, 1 January, 15 January, I February, 15 February and 1 March and four varieties of Vigna spp. viz., BARI mug-2 , BARI mug 3, BARl mug-4 and BARl mug-5 were used in the experiment. The unit plot size was 8m X 5m. Seed used in case of BARImug-5 @ 50 kg/ha but other varieties used @ 30 kg/ha. The experiment plot was fertilized with NPK @ 10-8-10- kg/ha in the form of urea, triple super phosphate (TSP) and muriate of potash (MP). The entire amounts of fertilizer were applied as basal dose before sowing. Thinning, weeding and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Data on plant height, pods/plant, seeds/ pod and 1000 seed weight were recorded from 10 randomly selected plants per plots. For seed yield an area of 3m X 1m was harvested from each plot. For yield data seed were dried and moisture adjusted by 8%. For biomas data recorded plants were oven-dried at 70 C to a constant weight. The data was analyzed MSTAT program and LSD compared the treatment means.

Achievement/Findings:

The study suggests that in Patuakhali condition optimum time of mugbean sowing was 2nd week of February. Among the varieties tested BARl Mug-5 performed best followed by BARl Mug-2.
