Seasonal Variations in Some Physiological Characters of Sesame (sesamum Indicum L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Some physiological parameters and seed yield and its components of two varieties of sesame grown in rabi and kharif seasons were evaluated. Chlorophyll content in leaf , leaf area index (LAl), and crop growth rate (CGR) of both the varieties were recorded higher in kharif as compared to rabi. The higher seed yield in kharif was associated with increased number of capsules per plant, bigger capsule size, higher seed weight per plant and also higher harvest index. In kharif, the higher seed yield influenced through higher CGR, LAL, chlorophyll content and prevailing higher solar radiation as well as higher air and soil temperature.

Objectives:

To find out the changes of some physiological parameters of sesame grown in rabi and kharif seasons which finally affect productivity.

Methodology:

With two varieties, T-6 and Jamalpur of sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) the present experiment was carried out at the research farm of the Institute of Postgraduate Studies in Agriculture, Salna, Gazipur, Bangladesh in rabi (from November 13, 1990 to March 5, 1991) and in kharif (from February 28, 1991 to May 15, 1991) seasons. The experiments were laid out in randomized complete block design with six replications. The unit plot size was 3 x 5 m². Seeds were sown in lines having a distance of 30 cm between lines and I0 cm between plants. All agronomic practices were performed in both seasons as and when necessary. Days to flowering were recorded in both seasons when in 50% plants flowers were observed. Chlorophyll content of leaves was estimated at the flowering stage of both seasons (Witham et al. 1986). Leaf area was measured by automatic leaf area meter (model AAM- 7, Japan). LAI was calculated as the ratio of total leaf area to the ground area. CGR and net assimilation rate (NAR) were estimated using growth analysis formulae specified by Radford (1967) sampling at 10 days interval starting from 20 days after emergence (DAE). Data were analysed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

It is clear from the study that kharif season has positive effect on growth parameters over rabi one and as such the kharif season is recommended for sesame cultivation.
