Zonal Yield Trial with M7 High Yielding Mutant Lines of T. Aman Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

All the mutants produced significantly higher yield than BRRI dhan49 at BINA sub-station farm, Rangpur. Tthe mutant RM(2)-50(C)-2-1-1 produced significantly higher yield in farmer’s field at Rangpur as well. Moreover, the mutant RM(2)-40(C)-4-2-7 produced significantly higher grain yield than the check variety at BINA farm, Mymensingh and Magura sub-station farm. The mutants RM (2)-40(C)-4-2-4 and RM (2)-40(C)-3-1-7 matured 13-16 days earlier than the check variety, BRRI dhan49. From the combined means, it was observed that the mutant RM(2)-50(C)-2-1-1 produced highest yield and had mostly similar maturity period with the check variety.

Objectives:

To assess genotype-environment interactions of the mutant lines in terms of earliness and grain yield

Methodology:

This experiment was carried out with four early maturing and high yielding mutant lines, derived from irradiating the seeds of BRRI dhan29 with carbon ion beams to assess performance over different locations of Bangladesh. BRRI dhan49 was used as a check variety. Seeds were sown during 07 July to 17 July 2013 and transplanted during 29 July to 15 August 2013 at different locations. The study was conducted during 2013-14 with a view to assess performance of M₇ high yielding mutant lines of T. aman rice over different locations of Bangladesh. Seeds were sown at BINA Headquarters farm, Mymensingh and finally transplanted to different locations of Bangladesh. Seedlings were transplanted following RCB design with three replications at 15 cm distance within rows of 20 cm apart. Recommended doses of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulphur and zinc were applied in the form of Urea, TSP, MOP, Gypsum and Zinc Sulphate. Cultural and intercultural practices were followed as and when necessitated. It appears that the plant height of the mutants were higher than the check variety at all locations. The experiment was carried out following RCB design with three replications. The size of the unit plots were 4.5 m × 3.0 m. Seedlings were transplanted at 15 cm distance within rows of 20 cm apart. Recommended doses of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulphur and zinc were applied in the form of Urea, TSP, MOP, Gypsum and Zinc Sulphate. Cultural and intercultural practices were followed as and when necessitated. Data on plant height, number of effective tiller, panicle length, filled and unfilled grains panicle^-1 were recorded after harvest from 5 randomly selected competitive plants. Maturity was assessed as plot basis. Grain yield were recorded from an area of 1.0 m² which was later converted to t ha^-1.

The mutant RM (2)-50(C)-2-1-1 was selected for further evaluation in the next T.aman season as it produced the highest yield and had mostly similar maturity period with the check variety, BRRI dhan49.
