Updating of Upazila Land and Soil Resource Utilization Guide, Sonargaon Upazila, Narayanganj

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This Upazila has 10 unions having 351 mouzas and 1 municipality. This Upazila is divided Madhupur Tract, mixed Madhupur Tract & Old Brahmaputra Floodplain, mixed Old Brhamaputra & Old Meghna Estuarine Floodplain, Young Brahmaputra Floodplain, mixed Old Meghna Estuarine Floodplain & Middle Meghna Floodplain. Four land types namely highland, medium highland, medium lowland & lowland are identified in the Upazila. Five textural types namely sand, sandy loam, loam, clay loam and clay are identified. In Madhupur Tract 6 soil types namely Belabo, Sayek, Kalma, Payati, Khilgaon and Karail; in mixed Modhupur Tract & Old Brahmaputra FP 3 soil types Payati, Rajasan, Savar Bazar; in mixed Old Brahmaputra FP & Old Meghna Estuarine FP 6 soil types Rampal, Sonatala, Silmandi, Tarakanda, Naraibag and Siddirganj; in Young Brahmaputra FP 4 soil types Tarakanda, Melandah, Dhamrai, Singair; in Middle Meghna Estuarine FP 3 soil types Jalkundi, Naraibag, Siddirganj and in Middle Meghna FP 5 soil types Fuldi, Homna, Borda, Meghna silty and sandy alluvium are identified. In total 96 composite samples were collected and analyzed in the laboratory. Fives water recession classes and 4 drainage classes are also identified. Ten major cropping patterns are recorded during the field survey. The Upazila was first surveyed in 1991 and updated in 2009.

Objectives:

Methodology:

Aerial photo-interpretative soil and landform map (1:25,000) of respective Upazila is prepared using remote sensing and GIS technique. The map consists of several mapping units comprising physiography, land form, land type, soil type and their proportions in a particular mapping unit. Field survey is carried out to verify the map through ground truthing. Survey is usually carried out in Rabi season-after the harvest of T.Aman. Soils are checked by opening mini-pit along the catena following a traverse line so as to cover maximum variability. Composite soil samples are collected following approved technique. Usually 1 sample is taken from every 200 ha area covering land type and soil type. Data on crops/cropping patterns, inundation level and duration, fertilizer/irrigation application in a particular checking point are recorded by interviewing farmers. Map is corrected after completion of field survey by accommodating changed features. Physical and chemical data are processed and guide is prepared.

Achievement/Findings:

The Total area of Sonargaon Upazila is sub-divided into Modhupur Tract (1030 ha, 5.75%); mixed Madhupur Tract & Old Brahmaputra FP (438 ha, 2.45%); mixed Old Brahmaputra FP & Old Meghna Esturaine FP (4240 ha, 23.69%), Young Brahmaputra FP (1829 ha, 10.22%); Old Meghna Esturaine FP (1412 ha, 7.89%) and Middle Meghna Estuarine FP (2585 ha, 14.44%). High land, medium high land, medium low land and low land occupies 1053 ha, 2221 ha, 5227 ha and 3152 ha area. Homestead, industrial area, river, pond occupy 2585 ha (14.44%), 1111 ha (6.21%), 2498 ha (13.95%) and 54 ha respectively.Moderately well drained, intermittently drained, poorly drained and very poorly drained soils occupy 2.1%, 3.7%, 59%, 0.2% of the total area. Fruit orchard (1.6%), Ginger/Turmeric/Sugarcane/Pineapple (0.9%), Rabi crops-Fallow-T.Aman (3.6%), mustard-Boro (5.2%), Boro-B.Aman (6.2%), Fallow-B.Aman (5.0%) and Rabi vegetables-Kharif vegetables (2.4%) are the major cropping patterns practiced in the Upazila. In Madhupur Tract and in mixed Madhupur Tract & Old Brahmaputra FP soils are deficient in N,P,K,S,B and Mg. In mixed Old Brahmputra FP & Old Meghna Estuarine FP and in Young Brahmaputra FP soils are deficient in N,P,K,S, and B. In Middle Meghna FP soils are deficient in N,P,K,S in general and B,Zn and Mg in some areas.
