An experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) farm, Gazipur during 1991 to 1993 to determine the optimum seed rate of dhaincha for biomass production and its carryover effect on the following rice crops. Dhaincha seeds were sown @ 25, 50, 75 and 100 kg/ha and 60-day-old dhaincha was incorporated in situ before transplanting of Aman (T. Aman rice). The incorporation of higher biomass resulted from increased seed rates of dhaincha enhanced total nitrogen in the soil. Fifty kg seed/ha was enough to produce biomass more than 5.0 t/ha (dry weight). Incorporation of dhaincha biomass increased grain yield of the following T. Aman and Boro rice.

To determine the biomass production of Dhaincha (Sesbania rostrata) and its carryover effect on the following rice crops

The experiment was conducted at the BRRI farm, Gazipur during the Aus, T. Aman and Boro seasons from 1991 to 1993. The soil of the experimental plots was a clay with pH 6.8, organic matter 1.41 %, total N 0.073%, available P 9.5 ppm and exchangeable K 65.3 ppm. The soil belongs to AEZ 28. Dhaincha seed was sown @ 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 kg/ha in 1st week of July in a puddled field in 1991 and 1992. Sixty-day-old dhaincha plants were chopped and plouged down in situ and was kept for 10 days for incorporation and then 40-day-old seedlings of BR22 were transplanted during second week of September in both the years maintaining 20-x 20-cm spacing in T. Aman season. Rice crop was fertilized with 40-40-10 kg P2O5-K20-S/ha, respectively, as blanket dose without any nitrogenous fertilizer. In the following Boro season, each unit plot was sub-divided into four to apply 0, 30, 60 and 90 kg N/ha to find out the residual effect of dhaincha in the following Boro season (2nd crop). To establish Boro crop, 60-40-10 kg/ha of P205-K20 and S was applied, respectively,to all plots as basal. Nitrogen was topdressed in equal three splits at in different growth stages of rice crops. Forty-day-old seedlings of BR3 were transplanted on 15 December 1991 and 10 January 1993, respectively maintaining the same spacing as done in the T. Aman season. The treatments were randomly assigned in RCB design during the T. Aman season, whereas in Boro cultivation, the unit plots were sub-divided for N application. At maturity, 10. hills were selected randomly for collection of data on plant height, number of panicles, filled grains, sterility percentage, grain and straw yields of rice. Grain and straw yields were taken from 5 m' area from each of the plot. Grains and straw were sundried. Grain yield was adjusted at 14% moisture content and the straw was dried properly under sunshine for 3-4 days. The grain and straw yields were then converted to ton/ha. Dhaincha population was counted at 20 days after sowing (DAS) and the plant height, dry matter production of dhaincha were recorded at 60 DAS, N content of dhaincha was also done. The collected data were analysed statistically and mean comparison were done following the Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

Dhaincha population was increased with the increasing seed rate. The highest stand and dry matter production was observed in plots with 100 kg seed/ha and was statistically similar to 75 kg seed/ha in 1991 and 50-75 kg seed/ha in 1992. The plant height of dhaincha did not vary among different seed rates. The percentage of N content of dhaincha was higher in lower seed rate plots and increased up to 50 kg seed/ha and then gradually decreased with the increase of seed rate but the amount of total N increased in higher seed rate plots probably due to higher dry matter production. The dry matter production from 50 kg seed/ha in the year 1991 and 1992 were 5.16 and 5.71 t/ha, respectively. Results indicated that to achieve dry matter more than 5.0 t/ha and corresponding increased amount of N, cultivation of dhaincha @ 50-100 kg seed/ha can be used under our climatic conditions
