Grain yields of rice varieties vary across different agro-ecological zones. Experiment was conducted on planting rice year-round at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), Regional Station, Rangpur to find out the suitability of cultivating some BRRI released varieties in 1999 and 2000. Dry matter accumulation of seedlings of BR 14 was higher than other varieties. BRRI dhan29 gave as high as 7.4 t/ha paddy yield. More than 4.5 t/ha grain yield was obtained from BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan32 planted in July to September. Growth duration of the rice varieties transplanted in December and January was about 30 days longer than that of those transplanted in March. BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan29, BRRI dhan32 and BRRI dhan33 could be cultivated year­round with satisfactory grain yields in Rangpur region except in March to June.

To find out the suitable varieties that can be cultivated through out the year round

The experiment was conducted at the BRRI Regional Station, Rangpur in 1999 and 2000. Soil of the experimental plots was light textured (42 % sand, 49.40 % silt and 9.60% clay) with low organic carbon (1.1 %); 5.3 pH, 38 ppm available P; Ca, Mg, and K were 2.8, 0.85 and 0.18 mg/100 g soil, respectively with randomized complete block design having three replications was used.

Ten varieties were used in the experiment. Seedlings were raised at one-month interval following BRRI's recommended cultural practice. However, seedbeds were covered with polyethylene at night during cold spell in December and January. The DM accumulation pattern in shoot and root of seedlings was investigated from the first three planting dates (11 March to 10 May 1999 seeding) only to relate its performance with grain yield. Randomly selected 10 seedlings from each variety, uprooted with bulk of soil, were cleaned and sun dried. The DM accumulation pattern was determined after oven drying at 700C for 48 hr and average DM per seedling was calculated.

Phosphorus, K and S applied at 26-50-30 kg/ha as triple super phosphate, muriate of potash and gypsum respectively during final land preparation. Urea N at 100 kg/ha was applied in three equal splits at 15 days after transplanting (DAT), at the maximum tillering stage and at the panicle initiation stage. Thirty-day-old one seedling/hill was transplanted at 25- x 10-cm spacing in 5- x I - m plot. Irrigation water was used as and when necessary. Standard pest control measures were followed. Crop of October planting totally failed because of Fe and Al toxicity. So, lime was used at 1 t/ha for growing succeeding rice in the same plot. Rice was harvested from whole plots when 90% grains became golden yellow. Grain yield was adjusted to 14% moisture content. Growth duration and spiklet sterility was recorded in December through March plantings because of prevailing extreme weather conditions during the period. In general, grain yield was low during April -June (Aus season). There was high spikelet sterility might be because of soil productivity problem and weather conditions which in turn caused reduction in grain yield. Although there was high spikeld sterility with most of the varieties, BRRI dhan29, yielded 3.68 t/ha grain followed by BRRI dhan28 (2.8 t/ha) on 9 April planting. With follow up observation and corrective measure also suggests that the crop suffered because of high acidity related problems, such as Fe and Al toxicity.

Rice crops of July to November are considered as T. Aman rice. In this season, more or less similar grain yields were recorded with all varieties on 10 July and 9 August plantings and then gradually declined. Among the varieties, BRRI dhan29 was the top yielder followed down by BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan32 and BRRI dhan33, respectively. In most cases there was yield advantage of lately released BRRI varieties that varied from 0.16 to 1.52 t/ha compared to BR14. Crop of October planting totally failed because *of Fe and Al toxicity. However, it was possible to grow succeeding rice crops successfully after liming the plots at 1 t/ha. Finally, harvested good crop (3.3 to 4.9 t/ha grain yields from September.
