Advanced Yield Trial with F7 Lines of Fine Grain and Higher Iron Containing Rice in Boro Season

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

At Mymensingh and Barisal all the lines and at Rangpur only two lines had higher grain yield than the check variety but it was not significant. Iron content was estimated for the three lines and the check variety. Highest iron content was found in the line RC-2-4-1-2 (31.2 mg/100 g grain). This amount is much higher than the other lines and the check variety. This line could be a good solution for mitigating the chronic iron deficiency of pregnant and lactating mother, and also the infants in our country.

Objectives:

To assess performance of three high yielding and iron rich rice lines in boro season over different locations of Bangladesh

Methodology:

This experiment was carried out with three high yielding and iron rich boro rice lines, derived from hybridization between an exotic iron rich rice and Binadhan-7, to assess performance over different locations of Bangladesh. Seeds were sown on 02 December 2013 at Mymensingh, Barisal and Magura and 31 December 2013 at Rangpur and transplanted during during 09 January and 12 February 2014. BRRI dhan28 was used as a check variety.The experiment was conducted following RCB design with three replications. The size of the unit plots were 5.1 m × 4.0 m. Seedlings were transplanted at 15 cm distance within rows of 20 cm apart. Recommended doses of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulphur and zinc were applied in the form of Urea, TSP, MOP, Gypsum and Zinc Sulphate. Cultural and intercultural practices were followed as and when necessitated. Data on plant height, number of effective tiller, panicle length, and filled and unfilled grains panicle^-1 were recorded after harvest from 5 randomly selected competitive plants. Days to maturity were assessed plot basis. Grain yield was recorded from an area of 1.0 m² which was later converted to t ha^-1.
