Screening of M2 Population of Carbon Ion Irradiated Nerica-10 Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

All the mutants had significantly shorter plant height and higher number of effective tillers than the parent NERICA-10. Four mutants had higher number of filled grains and six had lower number of unfilled grains plant^-1 than the parent NERICA-10. Moreover, all the mutants matured 25 days earlier than the parent. Grain yield of six mutants were significantly higher than the parental line.

Objectives:

To screen and evaluate M₂ population of Carbon ion irradiated NERICA-10 for identifying stable mutant with higher yield under rain fed condition

Methodology:

This experiment was carried out with nine M₂ mutant populations derived by irradiating the seeds of NERICA-10 with carbon ion beams. Seeds were sown on 6 August and transplanted on 3 September 2013 following non replicated design at BINA head quarters farm, Mymensingh. Spacing between plants and rows were 15 cm and 20 cm, respectively. Two rows of 3.0 m length comprised a unit plot. Recommended doses of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulphur and zinc were applied in the form of Urea, TSP, MOP, Gypsum and Zinc Sulphate. Cultural and intercultural practices were followed as and when necessitated. Data on plant height, number of effective tiller, panicle length, and filled and unfilled grains panicle^-1 were recorded after harvest from 5 randomly selected competitive plants. Days to maturity were assessed plot basis.

Achievement/Findings:

On the basis of shorter plant height, higher number of effective tiller and earliness, six mutants : RM-N₁₀-40(C)-1-1, RM-N₁₀-40(C)-1-2, RM-N₁₀-40(C)-1-4, RM-N₁₀-40(C)-1-5, RM-N₁₀-40(C)-1-6, RM-N₁₀-40(C)-1-7 were selected under rainfed condition for further evaluation in the M₃ generation, in aus season 2014.
