Efficiency of Nimin-coated Urea as Controlled Release Nitrogen Fertilizer on Mustard

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at the Soil Science Field laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University to investigate the efficiency of nimin-coated urea on mustard (cv. BINA Sharisha-4) on a silt loam soil. The treatment combinations used were T₁: Control (-N), T₂: Urea (86 kg N ha^-1), T₃: Urea (115 kg N ha^-1), T₄: Nimin-coated urea (86 kg N ha^-1), and T₅: Nimin-coated urea (115 kg ha^-1). The results indicated that the application of nimin-coated urea significantly increased most of the yield contributing parameters, N-uptake, seed yield and oil content of mustard. The highest seed yield of 1.6 t ha^-1 was obtained in T₅(nimin-coated urea 115 kg N ha^-1) treatment as against 1.49 t ha^-1 obtained under T₄treatment having the same rate of N applied. The lowest seed yield of mustard was recorded in control treatment (0.40 t ha^-1). The oil content of mustard similarly increased significantly under T₅, treatment compared to all other treatments. However, the highest agronomic N-use efficiency was obtained in T₄ (nimin- coated urea 86 kg N ha^-1), which was 13.37 compared to the second highest N use efficiency (10.43) obtained in T₅, treatment, Use of nimin coated urea, an environmentally friendly fertilizer appeared to be best on production of mustard.

Objectives:

i) To study the effect of nimin-coated urea on yield contributing attributes, crop yield, oil, protein content and N uptake in mustard

ii) To compare the nitrogen use efficiency of nirnin-coated urea with urea.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the Soil Science Field laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University during the Rabi season (November 2003-February 2004). The study area falls under the Ago- ecological Zone of Old Brahmaputra Floodplain (AEZ-9). The soil is silt loam in texture having nearly close to neutral pH (6.6). Organic matter content 1.69%, total N 0.09%, available P 9.67 ppm, exchangeable K 0.10 m.e.%, available S 11.50 ppm and CEC 9.76 m.e.%. There were five treatments used in the experiment, such as T₁: Control (-N), T₂: Urea, :3/4 th of the recommended N rate (86 kg N ha^-1), T₃: Urea, recommended N rate (115 kg N ha^-1), T₄: Urea-Nimin, 3/4th of the recommended N rate (86 kg N ha^-1) and T₅: Urea-Nimin full recommended N rate (115 kg N ha^-1). Nimin-coated urea was prepared by simple mixing urea (50 kg) with nimin (250g) a self adhesive neem extract. The field experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with four replications of each treatment. The unit plot size was 5 m x 4 m. The test crop used was mustard (cv. BINA Sarisha-4). Basal application of phosphorus, potassium and sulphur were done as TSP, MOP and gypsum at the rate of 36 kg P ha^-1, 35 kg K ha^-1 and 27 kg S ha^-1, respectively. Urea was applied in three splits as conventional, 1/3 at planting and the remaining 2/3 in two equal splits, one month and two months after sowing of seeds.

Achievement/Findings:

Mustard is the principal oil crop of Bangladesh. But the oil yield of mustard in Bangladesh is much less compared to world average. As such there is an urgent need for increasing seed and oil yield of mustard crop in Bangladesh. Nitrogen is the principal fertilizer element needed for increased yield of mustard in Bangladesh. Urea is the most widely used nitrogen fertilizer used in crop production. However, its utilization by the crop is much less, because of losses of urea- N through a number of ways such as volatilization, leaching, denitification etc. Nimin has been used as a coating material for controlled release of N from urea to improve its use efficiency and increase mustard seed and oil content. It was found from the experiment that both seed and oil yield of mustard could be increased substantially with a lower rate of N (25% less than recommended) of urea as the N source by coating urea with nimin. It, thus, ensures higher yield as well as saving of substantial quantities of urea fertilizer in production of mustard crop.
