Effect of Npk Fertilizers on Growth, Yield and Quality of Malta in Hill Slope

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The field experiment was conducted at the Hill Agricultural Research Station, Khagrachari during September 2004 to October 2005 to determine the optimum dose of NPK fertilizers for proper growth, yield and quality of Malta in hill slope. Eleven treatments comprised four levels of each of NPK fertilizers at different combinations. The combination of NPK fertilizers significantly influenced on growth, yield attributes and yield of Malta. The highest fruit yield per plant and per hectare were 23.87 kg and 9.55 ton, respectively which were 65.80% higher over control from the NPK fertilizers combination of 0.70-0.33-0.50 kg/ha/year. This combination earned the maximum net return of Tk 157581 with the highest BCR of 1.89 and spent the lowest for producing per kg fruit (Tk 18.49).

Objectives:

To determine the optimum dose of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium for proper growth, good yield and high fruit quality of Malta in hill slope.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at the Hill Agricultural Research Station, Khagrachari during September 2004 to October 2005. The plants selected for this study were of six year old, more or less uniformly growing, BARl Malta 1 (Mosambi) trees on pummelo rootstock and planted at a distance of 5 m x 5 m in south front of 20-30% hill slope providing partial shade by the nearest big trees. The soil of experimental site was sandy loam textured, with pH 5.2, organic matter 2.4%, total N 0.17%, P 5.14 µg/g of soil, K 0.43 miliequivalent/100 g of soil. The NPK fertilizers were applied as urea, triple super phosphate (TSP) and muriate of potash (MOP). The experimental plants received a constant dose of Zn 19,6 g, Mg 390 g and B 3.4 g/plant/year as zinc sulphate, dolomite and boric acid. All the fertilizers were applied in two equal splits in 3rd week of September 2004 and 2nd week of May 2005 after a shower of rain. The experiment was under rain fed condition. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications and one plant as a unit under each treatment. The data on growth parameters were recorded at the first fertilizer application time and the harvesting time. The plant height was measured from the ground level to the highest point of crown and trunk diameter 3 cm above the ground level using verniar calipers. Ten fruits were randomly collected from all sides of the tree under each treatment for individual fruit weight and quality parameters such as juice, TSS. The data were statistically analyzed by computer package program of MSTAT -C and means were compared by using Duncan's Multiple Range Test at 5% level of significance. Cost and return analysis was also done.

From this experiment the application 0.70 kg N, 0.33 kg P and 0.50 kg K may be recommended for higher yield and better fruit quality for 6-7 years old Malta plantation in hilly areas of Bangladesh
