An Investigation of Insect, Pest Management Problems in Nursery of Floodplain Ecosystem of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This paper attempts to explore the nursery owner's practices on insect pest and disease management for common nursery tree seedlings species. For this, a survey was conducted at fifty nurseries of two locations in Dinajpur district during September to October 2005. The data were collected through interview schedule and it give a brief account of II species of insect pests and five diseases attacking the seedlings of nurseries at floodplain ecosystem of Bangladesh. A number of problems have been identified as barrier for producing quality seedlings, where infestation with ant and leaf curl were found as the most harmful pest and disease respectively. Damage of seedlings by cattle and lack of skilled man power were the other important problems. However, for promoting the present status of quality planting materials, respondents opined to improve the management level and skill of concern nursery owners urgently.

Objectives:

To identify the problems and potentials of the commonly occurring tree species in the context of their production and management.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in randomly selected fifty nurseries in Birgonj and Sadarupazila of Dinajpur district from an updated list provided by Upazila Agriculture Office. The total number of Government and private nurseries enlisted by DAE was 56. There are also some other nurseries, which had not been listed. However, the researcher randomly selected 50 nurseries for this study. To get valid and pertinent information, an interview schedule was carefully designed keeping the objectives of the study in mind. Both open and closed-ended simple and direct questions were included in the schedule. Appointments with the respondents were made in advance with the help of Sub Assistant Agricultural Officer and local leaders. While starting the interview with any nursery owner, the researcher took all possible care to establish rapport with them so that the nursery owners did not feel any hesitation to finish proper answers. Age of respondents was categorized in to three groups. Young aged (22-34 years), middle aged (35-46 years) and older aged (>46 years). Education of a respondent was defined as the formal education received up to a certain level from an educational institute (e.g. primary school, high school, college, and university) at the time of interview. The level of education had been categorized into primary level (Class I- V), secondary level (class VI- X), higher secondary level (class XI-XII), and graduate and above. Collected data were compiled, coded, tabulated for processing and analysis was done in accordance with the objective of the study. The SPSS 11.5 computer package program was used to analyze the data. Descriptive statistics like range, number and percentage and as well an average were calculated in explaining the descriptive data.

Achievement/Findings:

A total of 10 insect species were identified in the study area where ant (80 percent) was the most harmful one. The other harmful insects were top shoot borer (60 percent), hairy caterpillar (46 percent), termites (40 percent), stem borer (34 percent), and field cricket and mole cricket (30 percent). Among the five identified diseases, leaf spot (80 percent) was the most harmful one followed by leaf curl (78 percent), damping off (52 percent), tip die back (42 percent) and leaf blight (40 percent). Nursery owners used four types of control measure namely cultural control, mechanical control, chemical control, and some botanicals. Among the different control measures, chemical control measure was widely used (sent percent) due to more incidences of insects and diseases during seedling production. A number of problems have been identified as barrier for nursery business. Lack of skill manpower (60 percent), training (50 percent) were the major problems. Other problems were lack of technical knowledge, capital, transportation, stolen of seedlings, and land scarcity etc. Respondent nursery owners gave their opinion for the production of quality seedlings. Collection of quality seed and fencing (90 percent) were the major suggestions. Seedbed preparation, proper management (drainage system, weeding, fertilizer application, irrigation, and pesticide application), proper training, HYV plant species, government support etc. were the other suggestions. They also opined that the availability of the soil for the mother plants were also essential to produce quality seedlings.
