Homestead Fruits and Vegetables Production and Utilization Systems in a Selected Area of Jamalpur District

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Data were collected from FSR site Narikeli, Jamalpur in order to explore mainly the consequence of homestead production and utilization systems under farming system research and development practices on the family income with particular emphasis on gender issues and women status. The average homestead was 0.20 ha, 0.14 ha, 0.08 ha and 0.07 ha for large, medium, small and marginal farmers, respectively. The average family size was 6.24. Net returns were sufficiently positive for all selected kinds of price and that of radish was the lowest due to lower price. It was observed that homestead fruits and vegetables practices earned substantial income for all categories of farmers. The women were involved in the household decision making process to a greater extent. The evidence was more spectacular in aspects like family planning, education of children, poultry rearing, plantation of fruits and vegetables and marriages of sons and daughters.

Objectives:

i) To determine the existing homestead production and utilization systems within households of different categories of farmers

ii) To know economic importance of homestead production including cost and return of homestead crops

iii) To assess the contribution of different family members in decision making for various farm and home activities.

Methodology:

In selecting sample of the owners of different homestead, convenient sampling procedure was followed. Data for the study were collected from primary and secondary sources. One hundred and fifty farmers were selected randomly on the basis of land holding i.e. marginal, small, medium and large farmers. Accordingly 45 marginal, 60 small, 25 medium and 20 large farmers were selected from study from five villages. The collected data were edited, summarized and analyzed to fulfill the objectives of the study. For analyses of data tabular and statistical techniques were used. Tabular techniques was applied with the help of statistical tools like average and percentage. Primary data were collected by the researcher himself in the month of January and February, 1999

Achievement/Findings:

The study revealed that net returns were sufficiently positive for all fruits and vegetables. Among all the vegetables, net return for ginger was the highest and those for radish was the lowest. It was also observed that production and utilization of different fruits and vegetable were quite satisfactory as more than 50% of the total production were used for their own consumption. It was clear that homestead practices increased production and income of the participating households. The most promising aspect was that homestead practice improved the status of the rural women as evidenced from their increased participation in the decision making process in activities like poultry rearing, plantation of fruits and vegetables, acceptance of family planning, educating children, marriage of son and daughter etc. thus, homestead fruits and vegetables production by the women households played a substantial role in increasing production and income and in upgrading their status. Lack of pure seed was perceived however, as the most important problem and most of the respondents advocated also for the availability of pure seed.
