Characterization and Evaluation of Rice Germplasm Accessions During 2010-11

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

During Aus, twenty five had moderate plant height (90-125 cm) and rest were tall (>125 cm). Seventeen had higher 1000-grain weight (>25 g), 8 medium (20-25 g) and remaining (04) had low (<20 g). The highest grain yield per hill (14.89g) obtained in Fulbadam (acc.7266). In T. Aman, one had short (<110 cm), three moderate (110-130 cm) and the rest (16) were long (>130 cm) plant height. Seven had long (>25 cm), 12 moderate (20-25 cm) and the rest (01) were short (<20 cm) panicle length. Besides, four were moderate (25-30 g) and the rest (25) had low (<25 g) 1000-grain weight. The highest yield per hill (21.78 g) observed in Bashful (acc. 1508). In Boro, fifty (50) had shorter (<80 cm), 153 moderate (80-100 cm) and the rest (82) were long (>100 cm) plant height. Thirty five (35) had higher (>25 cm) panicle length and rest were moderate to small. 168 accessions had higher (>25 g), 108 medium (20-25 g) and remaining (09) were low (<20 g) 1000-grain weight. The highest yield per hill (30.12 g) obtained in Zhonghua-15 (acc.6440). The variety having higher yield would be utilized in crossing program if other characters satisfy the breeder.

Objectives:

To characterize and evaluate the stored as well as new collection of rice germplasm.

Methodology:

Agro-morphological characterization of germplasm accessions is fundamental in order to provide information for plant breeding programs (Lin, 1991). Adequate characterization for agronomic and morphological traits is necessary to facilitate utilization of germplasm by breeders (Upadhyaya et al., 2008). A total of 337 germplasm accessions in which 29 accessions in Aus 2010, 20 accessions in T. Aman 2010 and 288 in Boro 2010-11 seasons were grown for characterization of 45 morpho-agronomic traits using the BRRI Rice Germplasm Descriptors and Evaluation Form. Single seedling per hill with a spacing of 25 x 20 cm between rows and plants, respectively were grown under transplanted condition using single row of 5.4 m long per entry. Fertilizers were applied @ 60:60:40 kg NPK/ha in T. Aman and Aus, and @ 80:60:40 kg NPK/ha in Boro seasons, respectively. Appropriate control measures were taken for pests, diseases and weeds when necessary.

Achievement/Findings:

During Aus, 28 accessions had medium to long growth duration (100-120 days) and only one had long (>120 days). Fifteen had higher panicle length (>25) and rest had moderate (20-25 cm). Maximum possessed medium number of effective tiller (10-15) and 11 had low (>10). Maximum showed higher grain length breadth ratio (>4) and some (10) showed medium. Acc. 7256 (Cray) has the lowest (17g) and the acc. 7244 (Chema) has the highest (30.80g) TGW. In T. Aman, five had short growth duration (<125 days), six medium (125-135 days) and nine long (>135 days). Seven had long (>25 cm), 12 moderate (20-25 cm) and the rest (01) were short (<20 cm) panicle length. Maximum (10) possessed moderate (10-15) number of effective tiller and one had higher (>15). Maximum (19) showed medium (3-5), one was higher (>5) grain length breadth ratio. In Boro, 146 had short (<135 days), 102 medium (135-150 days) and 37 had long (>150 days) growth duration. Thirty five (35) had higher (>25 cm) panicle length and rest were moderate to small. Maximum (153) possessed medium (10-15) number of effective tiller and the rest low to high. One hundred and twenty eight showed higher (>4) and 157 showed medium (2-4) grain length breadth ratio. Acc. 6543 (IR70181-3-PMI-1-1-6-1) has the lowest (14.5 g) and 6519 (86024-TR-901-3-2-1) has the highest (32.20 g) TGW.
