Roguing was done in every variety at each crop stage in the field. After field inspection and laboratory test, a total of 124.27 tons of breeder seed of which 35.38 tons from 24 varieties in T. Aman and 88.89 tons from 10 varieties in Boro seasons were produced during 2010-11. Among the production, BRRI R/S Comilla produced the highest amount of BS (27.16 tons). Besides, the highest amount of BS (11.76 tons) was produced from BRRI dhan49 during T. Aman and 43.34 tons from BRRI dhan28 during Boro seasons, respectively. On the other hand, a total of 107.14 tons breeder seed of which 27.6 tons from18 varieties in T. Aman and 78.71 tons from 10 varieties in Boro and 0.83 tons from 6 varieties in Aus seasons were distributed from previous years stock during 2010-11. Among the distributed BS, 30.54 tons were distributed to GO, 3.22 tons to NGO and 63.38 tons to PS seed producing organizations/companies. Besides, BRRI has been supplying breeder seed through the BRRI’s Rice Seed Network to the partner organizations for producing foundation seed for increasing quality rice production of the country.

To produce and supply of breeder seed of BRRI varieties as per indent of GO, NGOs  and PS seed producing organizations/companies to increase the production of the country.

Each variety was sown from nucleus stock (NS) as intact panicles (panicle to row method) in BRRI, Gazipur and mass harvested seed (broadcast method) in BRRI regional stations. During transplanting in T. Aman and Boro seasons, each variety was grown using single seedling per hill. Fertilizers were applied @ 80:60:40 kg NPK/ha in T.Aman and @ 100:60:40 kg NPK/ha in Boro seasons along with Gypsum @100 kg/ha, and Zinc sulphate @10 kg/ha, respectively. Roguing was done in every stage with proper record keeping. At seedling stage, plants with different height and shape from standard (true to the type) were rogued. At maximum tillering stage, plants with different leaf sheath and leaf color, leaf shape and angle were rogued. At flowering stage, grain with different size, shape and color from the standard (true to the grain type of the produced variety) were rogued. Panicles from standard plants for each variety were harvested, dried and kept separately as nucleus stock for the next year. The panicles were kept as intact for growing breeder seed in BRRI Gazipur, while remaining panicles for regional stations were kept after threshing. The plots were mass harvested to preliminary consider as breeder seed after getting ‘field certificate’ from Seed Certification Agency (SCA). After harvest, the seed of each variety were threshed, dried, cleaned separately and stored in polythene coated gunny bag in the seed store room with controlled temperature (20°C with 60% RH) at BRRI, Gazipur. The harvested seed then finally offered as seed lot for getting the ‘seed certificate’ along with one green Breeder seed ‘tag’ per 10 kg bag from SCA. Finally, after getting field and seed certificates from SCA, the produced seed were then treated as ‘breeder seed’ for distributing to the GO, NGOs and PS seed producing organizations/companies as per indent before all rice seasons.
