Present Status of Drum Seeder Use in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was undertaken to ascertain the present status of drum seeder (DS) use in Bangladesh. The data were collected from the farmers and Agricultural Extension Officers (AEO) of all upazilas in Bangaldfesh through a structural interview. Total number of farmers trained on the use of drum seeder, area covered by drum seeder, yield for using drum seeder at different upazillas in different districts of Bangladesh were collected and presented in graphical form. It was found that the average rice yield for using DS and transplanting methods were 3.09 (mt/ha) and 2.91 (mt/ha) respectively. T-test indicated that the yield from DS was significantly higher (5.8%) than the yield from transplanting method. It was also found that the average yield might be varied 3.09±0.10 (mt/ha) and 2.91±0.08 (mt/ha) at 95% confidence level for using DS and transplanting method respectively. It was observed that the total area covered by drum seeders in Bangladesh was only 909 ha. The farmers also reported that time, labour and cost can be saved for using a drum seeder. However, more weeds and lack of irrigation water were the main problems to use drum seeder. In addition, farmers are not aware of benefit for using drum seeder. Therefore, it was found that some farmers did not use drum seeders after getting training. No relation was found between training of farmers and number of drum seeders used in different upzillas. However, it was found that drum seeder will contribute to increase the yield and minimize the cost of rice production in Bangladesh.

Objectives:

1. To find out the present status of drum seeder in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The research work has been done by collecting of data from Agricultural Extension Officer (AEO) of different upzillas in Bangladesh and Khamarbari, Dhaka. In order to collect valid and reliable information an interview schedule was prepared in Bangla. Interview schedule was used as the research instrument designed carefully keeping the objectives of the study in mind. Both open and closed forms of questions were used to collect information. Simple and direct questions were included in the interview schedule for collecting information regarding use of drum seeder by farmers. Data were collected personally by researchers through person to person interview to find out the present status of drum seeder use in Bangladesh.After completing survey all interview schedules were compiled. Local units were converted into standard unit (for every answer of questionnaires, it converted into one mark). The responses of the individual respondent contained in the interview schedules were transferred to a quantitative form for the tabular and graphical presentation for better understanding and comparing the variables. After collection, the data were analyzed in accordance with the objectives of the study. Various statistical parameters such as mean, median, mode, standard deviation, range, minimum, maximum, sum, etc, were calculated using Microsoft Excel software. T-test of yields from DS and transplanting were analyzed by Microsoft Excel on assuming that there was no difference of yields.

Achievement/Findings:

i) Farmers’ training on DS use could not find any direct relation; the reasons behind it should be investigated for successful introduction of the drum seeder. ii) The findings indicated that the yield had significant positive relation with the use of drum seeder. Therefore, it is concluded that drum seeder would play an important role to increase the rice production in Bangladesh. iii) Most of the farmers were interested to use the drum seeder but they are worried about weed and timely irrigation.
