The main purpose the study was to know about import, storage and distribution process of onion and to find the quality of these imported onion, germination capacity, and vigor. An attempt was also made to explore the relationship of seven (7) independent variables with people’s knowledge level. The variables were age, education, tenure of service, knowledge about import, storage, and distribution, information about import, information about storage, information about distribution, general problems regarding import, storage and distribution activities.  Person’s product-moment correlation co-efficient were computed to examine the relationship between the concerned variable. The findings revealed that majority (50.769 %) of the peoples had high knowledge compared to 46.153% having medium knowledge about onion import, storage and distribution and 3.076 % having low knowledge in their activities. Out of seven independent variables, education, tenure of service, and distribution had significant relationship with knowledge in their activities. Age, information about onion import, information about onion storage had no significant relationship with their knowledge and problems regarding import, storage and distribution activities in their activities. The highest germination was found in Patna (40.0 %), while the lowest was recorded in Bellary (5.33 %).The highest seedling vigor was encountered in Patna (1215.3) and lowest in Bellary (145.38. From the findings of present study, it may be concluded that the seed samples of different onion varieties collected from Hakimpur Upazila are not of good quality.

  1. To collect information regarding the onion import, storage, and distribution process
  2. To test the germination capacity and vigor of these imported bulbs.

The study was conducted in Hakimpur upazila of Dinajpur district import. Onion import, storage, and distribution had been observed in four Unions of Hakimpur upazila. Four unions namely, Hakimpur, Alihat, Boaldar, Khattamadhabpara and Hakimpur were randomly selected for conducting the study. Germination test was conducted in the department of Entomology. About 5-6 months required for the research work from the month of 15 August-15 October, data collection and another three months required for germination and vigor test of onion bulbs. The present study was conducted to investigate the process of onion bulb import, storage, and distribution system and quality test of these bulbs. In the context, an update data about the imported onion bulbs prepared with the help of Quarantine manager.  Sixty five populations were selected for conducting the study. So, the sample size of the study was 65. At first managers were interviewed following a questionnaire developed to collect information about different parameters of onion import, storage, and distribution process. Germination test of the collected samples (onion bulbs) were done in sand media.  Metallic trays (21"x 21") were used for that purpose.  Sand used in this method was collected from the workers working for reconstruction of the academic building of BAU, Mymensingh. Four inch layer of sand was given in each metallic tray. 100  bulbs  were  sown  in sand,  in each  metallic trays four  lines (25 seeds per tray) four  varieties  onion bulb were sown for  germination  test  named  Nasik, Patna, Bellary  and Deshi onion. Water was given after two days interval ,Germination  percentage  was  recorded   thrice  at  0, 7 and  14  days  after sowing. Total germinated seedlings, normal seedlings, abnormal seedlings, diseased seedlings, were counted and expressed in percentage. This method developed for determination of vigor. For determination of seedling vigor of onion bulbs 2 seedlings per replication were selected randomly and their individual shoot and root length were measured. Vigor Index= (mean of root length + mean of shoot length) x percent of seed germination. Data were collected  from the sample drawn through the personal interview schedule during the 15th August to 15th September 2011. The researcher also discussed the objectives of the study with respondents so that they did not feel hesitation at the time of interview. However, if any respondents failed to understand any question, the researcher took necessary care to explain the issue as for as possible. After completion of the interview, it was checked and editing was done in case of necessity. The researcher did not face any major problem in collecting data. The collected data were compiled, coded, tabulated and analyzed in accordance with the objectives. The statistical measures such as, number and percentage distribution, range, means, standard deviation and rank order were used for describing the variables of the study. The analysis was performed by using statistical treatment with SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) computer package. To find out the relationships between awareness of farm and homestead activities and the selected characteristics of the respondents, The Pearson’s product moment correlation co-efficient (r) was computed. Correlation matrix was also computed to determine the interrelationship among the variables. If the computed value of co-efficient is larger than the tabulated value, the null hypotheses were rejected and it was concluded that there was a significant relationship between the concerned variables. However, when the computed value of co-efficient of correlation ‘r’ was found smaller than the tabulated value at the designated level of significance for the relevant degree of freedom, it was concluded that the null hypothesis accepted and hence, there was no linear relationship between the concerned variables.
