Among the 20 GI varieties, 4 germplasm had medium (100-120 days) and 16 with long (>120 days) growth duration, while the lowest (103 days) was observed in Bashful (acc. 3852) and the highest (164 days) in Horkoach (acc. 4772). Twelve had moderate (20-25 cm) and the rest (08) had short (<25 cm) panicle length. Ten varieties had low (<20 g), 8 were moderate (20-25 g) and two had high (>25 g) 1000 grain weight, while accession number 3852 (Bashful) was found with the lowest (10 g) 1000 grain weight and the accession number 4887 (Biruin) the highest (29.3 g). The highest yield per hill (40.24 g) was observed in Horkoach (acc. 4772) in the experiment. The variety having higher yield would be utilized in crossing program if other characters satisfy the breeder. The rest accessions would be used as parental sources for breeding program with respective objective(s).

To characterize and evaluate the 20 Geographical Indication (GI) varieties for protection of rice germplasm from biopiracy. 

Agro-morphological characterization of germplasm accessions is fundamental in order to provide information for plant breeding programs (Lin, 1991). Adequate characterization for agronomic and morphological traits is necessary to facilitate utilization of germplasm by breeders (Upadhyaya et al., 2008). A total of 20 Geographical Indication (GI) varieties viz. Biruin (4887), Kalojira (4755), Topa (962), Begunbichi (4563), Chinigura (4867), Balam (4945), Dadkhani (6721), Binni (4477), Pashusail (3990), Katarivhogh (4791), Chamara (6628), Digha (6673), Bashful (3852), Tulsimala (4870), Horkoch (4772), Birpala (5320), Sadamota (1576), Galon (4923), Radhuni pagal (6711) and Joina (5315) were characterized on the bases of 45 morpho-agronomic traits using the rice germplasm descriptors and evaluation form. The 20 Geographical Indication (GI) varieties were grown in all the three (Aus, T. Aman and Boro) seasons. Single seedling per hill with a spacing of 25 x 20 cm between rows and plants, respectively were grown in the field where single row of 5.4 m long per entry/accession was used. Fertilizers were applied @ 60:60:40 kg NPK/ha in T. Aman and @ 80:60:40 kg NPK/ha in Boro seasons, respectively. Appropriate control measures were taken for insect pests, diseases and weeds when necessary.

Among the 20 GI varieties, one germplasm had short (<90 cm), six were moderate (90-125 cm) and 13 had long (>125 cm) plant height, while the lowest (89 cm) was observed in Digha (acc. 6673) and the highest (169 cm) in Chamara (acc. 6628). Nine varieties had low (<10), 07 moderate (10-15) and 04 had high (>15) number of effective tillers, while the lowest (5) was observed in Chamara (acc. 6628) and the highest (24) in Biruin (acc. 4887). Nine varieties showed high (>4) and 11 showed moderate grain length breadth ratio, while the lowest (3.29) was observed in Chinigura (acc. 4867) and the highest (5.4) in Katari bhog (acc. 4791). The lowest yield per hill (7.2 g) was observed in Kalojira (acc. 4755) in the experiment. The Bashful (acc. 3852) was found with the lowest (10 g) and Biruin (acc. 4887) with the highest (29.3 g) 1000 grain weight. The grain weight of rice is believed to be a maternally inherited character. Therefore, the accessions having higher 1000-grain weight (GW) could be used as a parent for hybrid rice development. The rest would be used as parents for breeding program with respective objective(s).
