Effect of Time of Planting on Growth and Yield of Some Promising Advanced Lines During Boro Season

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The growth duration and grain yield of promising lines/varieties gradually decreased with the advancement of planting dates. The promising line BR7830-16-1-5-3 produced 4-5% higher grain yield over the check variety BRRI dhan28, irrespective of planting dates up to 16 February and then decreased. BR7830-16-1-5-3 matured 10-13 days later than the check variety BRRI dhan28. However, weed tolerant rice showed similar grain yield with check variety BRRI dhan28 but matured 10 days later than that check variety. So the promising line BR7830-16-1-5-3 could be used in future research work to develop a new variety by the plant breeder.

Objectives:

To find out the optimum time of planting of Boro rice variety/promising line to obtain higher grain yield before releasing a new variety.

Methodology:

The trials were conducted at the BRRI Farm, Gazipur in Boro season, 2013-14. The promising lines were BR7830-16-1-5-3, Weed tolerant rice, BR7671-37-2-2-3-7, BR7833-11-1-1-2-1-2B5 and Zhongzu 14 including check variety BRRI dhan28 were planted (from 12 January to 15 March). Forty days old seedlings were transplanted spaced at 20- x 20-cm spacing. The treatments were distributed in a split-plot design, where placing planting date in the main plots and promising lines/varieties in the sub-plots with three replication. Fertilizers were applied at 120-35-60-10 kg ha-1 N-P-K-S as urea, TSP, MOP and gypsum. All fertilizers except urea were applied during final land preparation. Urea was applied as top dress in three equal splits at active tillering (AT), maximum tillering (MT) and finally at 5-7 days before panicle initiation (PI) stages.

Achievement/Findings:

None of the promising line performed well than the recommended check variety BRRI dhan28 in respect of grain yield with growth duration.
