Comparative Study of Rat Damage in Bed Planting, Line Sowing and Broadcasting Wheat in Rajshahi Region

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A comparative study was conducted on rat damage in bed planting, line sowing and broadcasting methods of cultivation in wheat growing area at Chargat and Durgapur upazilla of Rajshahi district. A questionnaire survey and direct damage counting methods were conducted in these selected areas. Among the 100 farmers (50 from Durgapur and 50 from Chargat), 100% farmers opined and also direct damage estimation revealed that the lowest damage was recorded in bed planting (2-3% tiller) compared with two other cultivation methods(10-20%). Maximum Rat infestation was occurred in booting stage (71%) than ripening stage (15%). About 91% farmers used poison bait, 41% used water and 31% used traps for controlling rat. Most of the farmers had no training on rat management and 100 % farmers reported that rat damage could be minimized by adopting new bed planting method in wheat.

Objectives:

To know the comparative rat damage among these cultivation methods by getting farmer opinion in wheat field through questionnaire survey and estimating the rat damage in wheat field by direct data counting method.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in the wheat field of Rajshahi region. Two wheat growing upazillas namely Chargat and Durgapur were selected for this study. The study was done in two ways i) Questionnaire Survey ii) Rat damage estimation by direct counting cut and uncut method.

Questionnaire survey

A Questionnaire survey on rat problem in farmers wheat field was conducted among randomly selected 50 farmers of each upazilla Chargut and Durgapur in Rajshahi District. Scientists of Vertebrate Pest Division took the framers interview with a prescribed questionnaire sheet. It included different question such vas size of farm, damage caused by the rats, intensity of rat damage in bed planting and other planting method, different control methods used by the farmers etc. All questionnaire sheets were carefully filled up, compiled, summarized and presented in tabular form.

Rat damage estimation by cut and uncut method

The experiment was conducted at farmers field of Chargat and Durgaour upazillasunder Rajshahi during December 2013 to May 2014. The experiment was laid out following RCB design with 10 replications. Ten plots in each upazilla were randomly selected. In each plot ten samples were taken. The data from these ten samples were used for calculation the damage in each plot as a percentage. Very large of very small plots were not selected for sampling data. Ten samples along one of the diagonals were selected in each plot. The distance between samples (between 3 to 5 steps) depends on the length of the diagonal. A sample closer than 3 meters (3 large steps) from any edge of the plot was not chosen. Each sample consists of 50 cm square frame in which all tillers, cut and uncut tillers were counted. These figures were put on a record sheet. The sampling frame in placed without looking, so that taking data would be real. After taking data from one plot next plots were selected randomly and repeated up to ten samples.

Percent damage was calculated with following formula:

Collected data were analyzed by one way analysis of variance and means were by least significant differences (LSD).

Achievement/Findings:

Rat damage was very low (2-3%) in bed planting method compared with other conventional planting methods (10-30%). In the same way yield was higher in bed planting than other conventional method due to low rat damage, lower seed rate, less irrigation requirement and minimum cultivation cost. So, bed planting method can be used as the best alternative against other planting method such as line sowing and broadcasting for escaping rat damage and getting higher yield.
