Characterization and Documentation of Rice Germplasm Accessions During 2012-13

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In Aus, 17 varieties were medium (100-120 days) and 33 had long (>120 days) growth duration with Chakila (acc. 152) (111 days) and Galong (acc. 7265) (186 days). Seven had long (>20 cm), 34 moderate (20-25 cm) and 9 with short (<25 cm) panicle length. The highest yield per hill (18.45 g) was observed in Kamarang (acc. 7263). In T. Aman, thirty germplasm had short (<120 days), fifty-five medium (120-130 days) and thirteen had long (>130 days) growth duration with Jirasail (acc. 6718) (103 days) and Sabrimaloti (acc. 5342) (138 days). Nine had long (>20 cm), 54 moderate (20-25 cm) and 35 had short (<25 cm) panicle length. Fourteen varieties possessed low (<5 g), 43 moderate (5-10 g) and 41 had higher (>10 g) yield/hill. The highest yield per hill (26.26 g) was observed in Tilockachari (acc. 61). In Boro, Fifty-two germplasm had short (<135 days), 44 medium (135-150 days) and two had long (>150 days) growth duration with Gochi (acc. 1971) (75 days) and Banajira (acc. 07) (158 days). Twenty-two had long (>20 cm), 63 moderate (20-25 cm) and 13 had short (<25 cm) panicle length. Two varieties possessed low (<5 g), 35 varieties possessed moderate (5-10 g) and the rest (61) of varieties/accessions had higher (>10 g) yield. The highest yield per hill (23.75 g) was observed in Cunail (acc. 178). The variety having higher yield would be utilized in crossing program, if other characters are satisfactory the breeder.

Objectives:

To characterize and evaluate rice germplasm for protection of rice germplasm from biopiracy.

Methodology:

Agro-morphological characterization of germplasm accessions is fundamental in order to provide information for plant breeding programs (Lin, 1991). Adequate characterization for agronomic and morphological traits is necessary to facilitate utilization of germplasm by breeders (Upadhyaya et al., 2008). A total of 250 germplasm accessions were characterized in Aus, T. Aman and Boro seasons on the bases of 45 morpho-agronomic traits using the rice germplasm descriptors and evaluation form. Among 250 germplasm, 50 accessions in Aus 2012, 100 in T. Aman 2012 and 100 in Boro 2012-13 seasons were grown, respectively. Single seedling per hill with a spacing of 25 x 20 cm between rows and plants, respectively were grown in the field where single row of 5.4 m long per entry/accession was used. Fertilizers were applied @ 60:60:40 kg NPK/ha in T. Aman and @ 80:60:40 kg NPK/ha in Boro seasons, respectively. Appropriate control measures were taken for insect pests, diseases and weeds when necessary.

Achievement/Findings:

In Aus, two had short (<100 cm), 18 were moderate (100-125 cm) and 30 had long (>125 cm) plant height with Turki (acc. 7423) (92 cm) and Bolun (acc. 268) (157 cm). Maximum (40) varieties possessed low (<10), eight moderate (10-15) and two had high (>15) number of effective tillers with Galong (acc. 7265) as 26. Twenty-eight had high (>4) grain length breadth ratio with Suri dhan (acc. 7264) (5.0). Nine had low (<20 g), 21 had moderate (20-25 g) and 20 had high (>25 g) 1000 grain weight with Shitki saita (acc. 154) (14.70 g) and Inda (acc. 266) (29.5 g). In T. Aman, eighteen had short (<110 cm), fifty-eight moderate (110-130 cm) and 22 had long (>130 cm) plant height, with Gochi sail (acc. 3554) (69.2 cm) and Motor sail (acc. 3294) (143 cm). Maximum (67) possessed low (<10), 27 moderate (10-15) and 04 had high (>15) number of effective tillers, with Ratisail (acc. 71) as 23. Sixty-eight had low (<25 g), 28 moderate (25-30 g) and two had high (>30 g) 1000 grain weight with Badsha bhogh (acc. 03) (9.9 g) and Horkoch (acc. 772)(32 g). In Boro, two germplasm had short (<100 cm), 21 moderate (100-120 cm) and 75 had long (>120 cm) plant height with Jalda IRRI (acc. 4206)(91.2 cm) and Badal Boro (acc. 4011)(158 cm). Twenty-six had low (<10), 48 moderate (10-15) and 24 had high (>15) number of effective tillers with Muktahar (acc. 1468) as 37. Eighty-four had low (<25 g), 13 moderate (25-30 g) and one had high (>25 g) 1000 grain weight (TGW) with Muktahar (acc. 1468)(15.2 g) and Madhabsail (acc. 2264)(33 g). The variety having higher yield would be utilized in crossing program, if other characters are satisfactory the breeder.
