Grain yield of T. Arran rice increased by 15-32% because of BRRI recommended cultural practices compared to farmer's practices (FP). None of the newly released BRRI varieties was superior to BR 11 in terms of grain yield. In the Boro season, BRRI recommended cultural management resulted in 18-33% higher grain yield of BRRI dhan28 compared to FP. In comparison to farmer's fertilizer management, grain yield of T. Aman rice increased by 1.6-2.5 t ha-1 because of soil test based (STB) fertilizer management or BARC recommendation at Kurigram site. Similar trend was observed with STB fertilizer management at Pirganj, Thakurgaon areas. Additional fertilizer costs incurred due to STB fertilizer management resulted in Tk 7820-16320 ha-1 added income during T. Aman' season and that of Tk 5525-19465 ha-1 during Boro season. Rice yield could be increased at farmer's field if they only adopt BRRI recommended cultural practices. The increase in grain yield would be much more higher if fertilizers are applied based on soil test and/or BARC recommendation.

The experiments were, therefore, conducted at farmers' fields to find out the influence of balanced fertilizer and BRRI recommended cultural management on the yield performances of BRRI rgleased varieties.

The trials were conducted at Kurigrarn and Pirganj, Thakurgaon at farmer's fields during T. Arran 2002 and Boro 2002-03 seasons. Kurigram site is located approximately between 25°05' and 26°25' N latitude, 88°25' and 88°50' E longitude. Pirganj, Thakurgaon is located approximately between 25°45' and 26°15' N latitude, 88°10' and 88°45' E longitudes. Soils were sandy loam to silty loam. Initial soil properties were: pH, 4.6-6.8; total N (%), 0.03-0.16; Olsen P (ppm), 3-89; exchangeable K (meq 100 g-1 soil), 0.06-0.35; available S (ppm), 617 and available Zn (ppm), 0.6-1.5. There were two sets of experiments in each site- one set was with fertilizer management and the other one with agronomic practices. In first set, the fertilizer treatments were imposed based on soil test (STB) and BARC-1997 manual and were compared with farmer's fertilizer management. In the second set, BRRI recommended management was compared with farmers' cultural practices. Fertilizer used in BRRI recommended management. Although 10 farmers' were selected for survey data collection, a complete set of treatments was imposed in a farmer's plot which was repeated at least 3-5 times in a location, and each farmer's plot was considered as a block. Rice varieties used in T. Aman season were BR11, BRRI dhan30, BRRI dhan3l, BRRI dhan33 and BRRI dhan39 and that of BRRI dhan28 during Boro season. For evaluation of improved agronomic practices all T. Aman varieties were used in both the locations. However, for evaluating fertilizer packages in T. Aman, BR11, BRRI dhan30 and BRRI dhan31 were used at Kurigram.

Grain yields of BR11, BRRI dhan30, BRRI dhan3l, BRRI dhan33 and BRRI dhan39 varied in two locations with different management practices . At Kurigrarn site, grain yield of BR11 with BRRI recommended management was about 6 t ha-1 which was 18-35% greater than FP. Almost similar trend was observed at Pirganj site. In general, grain yields of all rice varieties increased when BRRI recommended cultural practices were followed than FP. On an average, 15.54% grain yield increase was observed at Kurigram site and it was 32.02% at Pirganj site. Although BRRI dhan39 showed good adaptability at Pirganj, Thakurgaon site, none of the newly released BRRI T. aman varieties were superior to BRII in terns of grain yield. The BRRI recommended cultural practices produced 1.73 t ha-1 (33%) and 1.05 t ha-1 (19%) higher grain yield of BRRI dhan28 compared to FP in Boro season at Kurigram and Pirganj sites, respectively. This yield gap was mostly because of imbalance fertilization by the farmers, no weed and insect control at the right time, and lack of good water management. Results clearly indicate that farmers' were not following improved rice production packages might be because of lack of technical know-how or some other adverse socioeconomic factors. It could be mentioned here that farm-specific technical
