Updating of Upazila Land and Soil Resource Utilization Guide, Purbadhala Upazila, Netrakona

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The Upazila has 11 unions having 226 mauzas. It is divided into Old Brahmaputra Floodplain (24,301 ha) and Northern and Eastern Piedmont plain (2,394 ha). Five land types namely high land (11,218 ha), medium high land (8,292 ha), medium lowland, low land (4,479 ha), lowland (1,257 ha) and very lowland (413 ha) are identified in the Upazila. Three textural types namely loam, clay loam and clay are identified. In Old Brahmaputra Floodpalin soil groups namely Sonatala, Silamndi, Lokdeo, Ghatail, Shymganj, Balina and Mohanganj are identified. In Northern and Eastern Piedmont Plain soil groups namely Konhsho, Susang and Chinakuri are identified. Five water recession classes namely very early, early, normal, late and very late are identified. Water recedes within Kartik from about 60% land thereby enabling timely cultivation of upland rabi crops. Four drainage classes namely moderately well drained, intermittently drained, poorly drained and very poorly drained are identified. Mustard-Boro-T.Aman; Potato-Boro-T.Aman; Wheat-Fallow-T.Aman; Boro-Fallow; mustard-Fallow-T.Aman; Fallow-T.Aman are major cropping patterns in the Upazila. In general soils are deficient in N,P,K,S and B. Some areas are also deficient in Zn, Ca and Mg.

Methodology:

Aerial photo-interpretative soil and landform map (1:25000) of Purbadhala Upazila is prepared using remote sensing and GIS technique. The map consists of several mapping units comprising physiography, landform, land type, soil type and their proportion in each mapping unit. Field survey is carried out in rabi season preferably after T.Aman harvest. Soils are checked by opening mini-pit along catena following a traverse line so as to cover maximum variability. Composite soil samples are collected from each land and soil type for chemical analysis in the laboratory to assess fertility status. Data on crops/cropping patterns, inundation level and depth of inundation, fertilizer/irrigation applied are recorded from each checking point by interviewing farmers. Map is corrected after field survey by accommodating changed features. Data on physical and chemical parameters are processed and finally the Upazila Nirdeshika is prepared.

Five water recession classes namely very early, early, normal, late and very late are identified. Water recedes within Kartik from about 60% land thereby enabling timely cultivation of upland rabi crops. Four drainage classes namely moderately well drained, intermittently drained, poorly drained and very poorly drained are identified. Mustard-Boro-T.Aman; Potato-Boro-T.Aman; Wheat-Fallow-T.Aman; Boro-Fallow; mustard-Fallow-T.Aman; Fallow-T.Aman are major cropping patterns in the Upazila. In total 144 composite soil samples have been analyzed in the laboratory. In general soils are deficient in N,P,K,S and B. Some areas are also deficient in Zn, Ca and Mg.Per capita land availability in the Upazila is only 0.11 ha.
