Fifty-one newly collected rice germplasm from hilly and coastal areas were characterized in Boro 13-14 season on the bases of 45 morpho-agronomic traits. The results of 33 qualitative characters of rice revealed that wide range of diversity existed in the collected germplasm. For blade pubescence, all germplasm showed intermediate type pubescence. For flag leaf angle, 19 germplasm showed Erect (<300), 11 were semi erect (<30-450), 14 were horizontal (<46-900) and 07 showed descending (>900) types flag leaf angle, respectively. In case of panicle type, 13 germplasm had compact, 20 had intermediate and 18 had open type panicle, respectively. In case of awns in the spikelet, only 22 germplasm showed awns on spikelet and rest of the germplasm (29) had no awn on spikelet. For lemma and palea colour, 42 germplasm showed straw, 01 showed gold, 05 showed reddish to light purple, 01 showed purple spots on straw and 02 showed black coloration on lemma and palea. The germplasm can be used as parents for breeding program as per objective(s).

To characterize and evaluate rice germplasm for protection of rice germplasm from biopiracy. 

Agro-morphological characterization of germplasm accessions is fundamental in order to provide information for plant breeding programs (Lin, 1991). Adequate characterization for agronomic and morphological traits is necessary to facilitate utilization of germplasm by breeders (Upadhyaya et al., 2008). A total of 51 new collected germplasm were grown in Boro 2013-14 season for characterization on the bases of 45 morpho-agronomic traits using the Rice Germplasm Descriptors and Evaluation Form, GRSD. Among the 45 morpho-agronomic traits, 33 were qualitative characters viz. Blade pubescence, blade colour, leaf sheath: anthocyanin colour, basal leaf sheath color, leaf angle,  flag leaf angle, ligule color, ligule shape, collar color, auricle color, culm anthocyanin colour, culm angel, internode colour, culm strength (lodging resistance), panicle type, secondary branching, panicle exsertion, axis, shattering, threshability, spikelet: awns in the spikelet, distribution of awning, awn colour, apiculus colour, stigma colour, stigma exsertion, lemma and palea colour, lemma and palea pubescence, sterile lemma color, seed coat (bran) colour, endosperm type, decorticated grain: scent (aroma) and leaf senescence. Single seedling per hill with a spacing of 20 x 20 cm between rows and plants, respectively were grown in the field where single row of 5.4 m long per entry/accession was used. Fertilizers were applied @ 80:20:40 kg NPK/ha. Appropriate control measures were taken for insect pests, diseases and weeds when necessary.

In case of anthocyanin colour of leaf sheath, 36 germplasm possessed no anthocyanin colour and 15 possessed anthocyanin colour on leaf sheath. For flag leaf angle, 19 germplasm showed Erect (<300), 11 were semi erect (<30-450), 14 were horizontal (<46-900) and 07 showed descending (>900) types flag leaf angle, respectively. Out of 51 studied germplasm, only 9 showed anthocyanin colour on culm and rest had no anthocyanin colour on culm. In case of panicle type, 13 germplasm had compact, 20 had intermediate and 18 had open type panicle, respectively. Out of 51 germplasm, 07 each had well exerted and partly exerted, 09 had moderately well exerted and 28 had just exerted type panicles. In case of awns in the spikelet, only 22 germplasm showed awns on spikelet and rest of the germplasm (29) had no awn on spikelet. For lemma and palea colour, 42 germplasm showed straw, 01 showed gold, 05 showed reddish to light purple, 01 showed purple spots on straw and 02 showed black coloration on lemma and palea. In case of leaf senescence character, 06 germplasm had late and slow, 32 had intermediate and 13 had early and fast types leaf senescence, respectively.
