Growth and Yield of Modern and Traditional Fine Grained Rice Genotypes in Aman and Boro Seasons

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was done at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Gazipur. Twelve traditional fine-grained rice genotypes were compared with modern aromatic rice varieties, which were transplanted on 15 August in Aman 1998 and 1 January in the Boro seasons 1999, to find out high yielding genotypes. Chinigura, Kataribhog (awnless) and Badshabhog exhibited higher grain yield (2.73, 2.55 and 2.53t/ha respectively) in both the seasons. The higher number of panicles, grains panicle^-1 and lower spikelet sterility contributed to higher grain yield and matured within 140-149 days. None of the test genotypes overcome the yield of BRRI dhan37 and BRRI dhan38 in Aman season, and Superfast (Indian) and Khazor (Iranian) in the Boro season. BRRI dhan37 and BRRI dhan38 are suitable for cultivation in the Aman season, and Superfast, Khazor for Boro season but the traditional rice, Chinigura and Kataribhog (awnless) can be planted in both the seasons to obtain satisfactory grain yield.

Objectives:

The present study was undertaken to find out fine-grained rice genotypes that having high yield potential for growing In the Aman and Boro seasons.

Methodology:

Ten locally popular traditional fine-grained rice genotypes, Chinigura, Kalijira, Kataribhog (awnless), Kataribhog (awned), Badshabhog, Madhumala, Chiniatap-1, Chiniatap-2, Zirabhog, Shakhorkhora, and two exotic rice Khazor and Superfast were transplanted along with BRRI dhan37 and BRRI dhan38 both in the Aman and Boro seasons. Thirty-day-old 2-3 seedlings hill^-1was transplanted on 15 August in Aman, 1998 and 40-day-old seedlings planted on 1 January in Boro seasons, 1999 at 20- x 15-cm. The treatments were distributed in a randomized complete block design and replicated thrice. Unit plot size was 3x 4 m. Fertilizers were applied @ 60-40-40-10-4 kg N, P₂0₅, K₂ 0, S and Zn ha^-1 for the Aman, and, 80-60-40-10-4 kg N, P₂0₅, K₂ 0, S and Zn ha^-1for Boro crops, respectively. All fertilizers except urea were applied as basal during final land preparation. Urea was topdressed in three equal splits at early tillering, mid tillering and at 4-5 days before panicle initiation stages in both the seasons. Weeding was done by hand at 20 days after transplanting (DAT) and at 40 DAT in both the seasons. Data recorded were plant height, tiller number, straw yield, grain yield and yield components.

Achievement/Findings:

Fine-grained rice Chinigura, Kataribhog and Badshabhog, and exotic rice Superfast can be cultivated both in thc Arnan and Boro seasons for satisfactory grain yield. But BRRI dhan37 and BRRI dhan38 are suitable for Aman and Khazor for Boro seasons.
