Intervention and Monitoring the Whole Farm Activities of Intervened Farmers During 2012-13

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Most of the farmers in Bangladesh have very limited land resource. To satisfy their needs farmers try to diversify their systems with crops and non crop components. It is realized that farmers’ existing situation cannot be improved at the desired level by adopting technologies only on crop component. Therefore, Rice Farming Systems Division of BRRI started farming systems research and development (R&D) activities at Moison, Kapasia by the intervention of farming systems technologies on crops and non-crop components with landless and small farmers. In this study income included the total amount of products consumed, distributed to the relatives and sale price of different products whereas household expenditure included the total cost of production of the intervened technologies. Results showed that intervention on non-crop components provided additional income. Average income of landless farmers’ were increased by 17.31% whereas expenditure was decreased by 11.84% respectively compared to the base year. On the other hand, average income of small farmers’ were increased by 30.30% whereas expenditure was increased by 23.30% respectively compared to the base year.

Objectives:

To increase income of the farm families through the intervention of improved farming system technologies.

Methodology:

Before interventions of farming systems technologies benchmark data for selected farmers were collected during 2009. Three farm families from each of landless and small farm categories were selected for interventions. Different farming system technologies were intervened on the homesteads based on the resources and opportunities of the selected farmers. The interventions for landless farmers were production of improved mango in the homestead, rearing of improved breed of layer and pigeon, rearing of goat, fertilization of jackfruit trees and spraying of mango trees and for small farmers’ those were, N-management through use of LCC in modern Boro and T. Aman rice, water saving technologies in rice, production of high value summer and winter vegetables, fertilization and insect management of bearing jackfruit, production of improved tumeric and ginger in the homestead, production of improved mango in the homestead, spraying on mango and litchi fruit trees (bearing trees), polyculture of fish in seasonal pond and rearing of honey bee. The income and expenditure data of the intervened farmers were collected using questionnaire. Finally, the collected data were analyzed and compared with base year data.

Achievement/Findings:

On an average annual income of landless and small group of farmers under interventions were increased by 17.31 and 30.30%, respectively compared to base year data at FSR&D site, Kapasia, Gazipur. Higher income was associated with interventions of technologies, off-farm and non-farm activities.
